Here is a status update on India’s stolen heritage. Tweet thread below. 1/14

As you all know, UNESCO estimates that 50,000 objects were smuggled out of India till 1989. Experts disagree on the number, but even one is far too many 2/14

Many of these are proudly displayed in museums and collections abroad. 3/14

Historically, India has never bothered to #BringOurGodsHome. It is the ONLY remnant of colonial-oppression that we have allowed to exist. 4/14

But since 2014, 6 nations have returned India’s stolen heritage. 4 of them personally received by PM Modi (a significant diplomatic gesture). 5/14

The biggest victory for India was in June 2016, when USA offered back 200 stolen artifacts to India. 6/14

However Modi ji’s personal enthusiasm hasn’t yet trickled down to his officers; who have brought back only 27 of these. 🙁7/14

President Macron recently declared that France would return heritage from Ghana taken away during the colonial-era. 8/14

There is a HUGE opportunity for India to reclaim its position in the world. Just imagine the power-shift that this singular image conveys. 11/14
