Natural hair aficionados, can we talk? I feel...a way about #NappilyEverAfter & I wanna discuss it with someone to make sure I'm not bugging...
Seems like I'm not alone in my discomfort so I'll start out with this:
I haven't read the book or anything so I may be way offbase (check me if that's the case), but if we're gonna deal w/ trauma associated w/ BW & hair, why is there no person with 4A/4B/4C hair involved?
Nothing against Lathan, but with a glance at the trailer, it seems like her character possesses what our community would refer to as "good hair" prior to it being "big-chopped".
Which is not to say that folx with other hair textures in our community don't experience trauma and aren't under pressure to mantain that "good hair".
But to pretend that it's on the same level as someone with 4-textured hair would be hella disingenuous, don't you think?
When I think "nappy" and historically, when folxs refer to "nappy", it's always deployed against someone who has 4A/4B/4C hair or who at least appears like they have that kind of hair. Followed by being goaded to straighten it or perm it because it's "unbecoming" of a "lady".
So like??? I think any film that deals with the complexity/burden/trauma of Black hair without dealing with how 4A/4B/4C hair is propped up as THE hair to *not* have is genuine 🤷🏾♀️
Anyone who read the book: can you chime in?
The other issue and am torn on is the whole "my hair is my personality concept". It strikes me as an...incomplete viewpoint on BW and our complex relationship with hair.
Incomplete and overly simplistic, actually.
What y'all think? Am I buggin or what???
