We are starting our first lecture of the fall series. Carolina Guerrero is being introduced by @umbc Assistant Prof. Thania Muñoz D. @MunozDaz1, who reminds us of the history of #HispanicHeritageMonth #humforum18

.@nuncaduermo assures the audience that the lecture will be in English but @radioambulante is completely en Español radioambulante.org/en/audio-en/ou…

.@nuncaduermo on the origins of @radioambulante: co-founder Daniel Alarcón was left disappointed after doing a story for BBC Radio which left out Latinx voices. They decided to create a space for those voices to be heard. #humforum18

There was a lot of resistance for a Spanish-language audio project in the US. #humforum18

We do personal journalism. We want people to tell us stories and feelings. #humforum18

We are a team of 14 people working from all across the world: New York, Bogotá, Mexico. We utilize different work elements such a @SlackHQ or @Dropbox

Guerrero: Most stories take 2-3 months, but some take 1-2 years to complete because of all the research involved. #humforum18

Guerrero: Funders and investors often discount us because we are Spanish-language. No! We are the same and want the same level of funding. #humforum18

Despite these issues, @radioambulante has grown since 2011 #humforum18. @ThisAmerLife has 1 million downloads per episode.

Guerrero: Our audience spans more than 100 countries and a large portion of our American population consists of non-native Spanish speakers (typically people who are learning Spanish) #humforum18

We have succesful partnerships with @NPR and @Radiolab. We co-produced a story called Los sobrevivientes that was published in English for Radio Lab and in Spanish for @radioambulante radioambulante.org/en/audio-en/tr…

Guerrero: We are working on many projects, including Escuela Radio Ambulante which will train Latinx journalists to create their own podcasts and the business element. escuelaradioambulante.org

The talk is over! Thanks to all who joined us. A recording of the lecture will be posted on our website dreshercenter.umbc.edu

Join us on October 11 as a part of @UMBC Ancient Studies Week with best-selling author and critic Daniel Mendelsohn my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/dresher…
