Vamana came to the door of Bali
At the time of a sacrifice great
Asking for the humblest charity
Three short steps of land to take
The king drunk on his power n wealth
Laughed at the dreary demand
Ask for something more he said
You know not my generous hand

No, said Vamana, this would suffice
All I need is a space to squat
Where none could disturb my peace
O King, just grant me what I ask
As the Asura haughtily sealed the oath
Releasing water from his palm
Vamana grew in stature at once
All visible space to span

His one step covering all of earth
His second step the endless sky
Fulfill your promise, O' Mighty King,
He roared in a temper high
In that moment Bali knew at once
Who was Vamana, he could tell
His ego dimmed. crumbled his pride
Prostrate on the ground he fell

O Lord of Lords! O King of Kings!
Forgive me my foolish pride
Worldly illusions had blinded my eye
I forgot your supreme might
My head is where your third step goes
O crush my ego to ground
O Merciful Master, your protection I seek
To you alone my destiny bound

Pleased by his answer Vamana smiled
Lifting him by the hand
Granting him a boon of devotion true
N an uncontested reign of the land
Thus goes the tale of Vamana n Bali
How Shri Hari to rescue came
When a devotee's ego crossed the bar
He descended himself to tame
