This would appear to be an FBI document showing the co-founder of Amnesty International ratting Black Panther leader Fred Hampton out to the FBI. 🤔 #FOIA

Oh he's a winner....

"He also helped free Hungarian Cardinal József Mindszenty, American expatriate poet Ezra Pound, former Congo President Moise Tshombe and represented the Dalai Lama and Tibet."

My lord. This Kutner a bad guy.

Moïse Tshombe, whom Kutner helped "free", was the leader of the Katanga secessionist state set up by the Belgians and the UK in order to break up the Congo during the premiership of Patrice Lumumba.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mo%C3%AFs…

Ezra Pound, of course, was the anti-semitic fascist poet beloved by CIA counterintelligence chief James Angleton.

The Dalai Lama, CIA agent

Based on his glazed-over appearance at his 1948 trial, the CIA made Mindszenty into the excuse of sorts for the expansion of their drugs and hypnosis mind control programs.

From John Marks' "The Search for the Manchurian Candidate"

"...he would like to take legal action to silence the BPP..." haha wow. The roots of Amnesty International.

Kutner was involved in the formation of a "private" public relations outfit called "The Friends of the FBI".

This was along with Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., who stared as "Inspector Erskine" in a highly successful television show called "The FBI".

Not unusual for someone connected with international fascism, the US government, and the mafia, Kutner also has a tangential relation to the murder of Kennedy. He reportedly intervened for Jack Ruby in a congressional investigation.

From Ramparts Magazine archive.org/stream/nsia-Ra…

Kutner was also deeply involved with the Taiwan Independence Movement, which attempted to assassinate the son of Chiang Kai-shek in 1970.

A worthy goal or not, I don't know, but just by looking at Wikipedia it appears the CIA was at work there again.

Kutner's informant file was destroyed in 1978, which is perhaps odd.

I know there was a successful push by congress to destroy the files of Americans who had been spied on in the Hoover years, but I didn't think that also meant destroying the files of those who did the spying...

FOIA fun.

A fairly long bio of Kutner from the Chicago Historical Society who keeps his papers.

Obit from the NYTimes: nytimes.com/1993/03/04/us/…

.@maryferrellorg has a considerable number of files on Kutner as well, going as far back to 1949: maryferrell.org/php/showlist.p…

A longer obit from the Chicago Tribune: chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-19…

Kutner left a small body of writing behind, including at least one tract on rebellion and tyrannicide. I guess that helps to understand why he could rationalize the defense and publicity of organizations which harbored assassins.

It definitely reminds one of Gene Sharp's "Dictatorship to Democracy, A Conceptual Framework for Liberation" and this sort of modern day regime change philosophy.

Like with the Taiwan Independence Movement, here's another example of Kutner aligning himself with a group not just advocating but carrying out violence... but then somehow he found what the BPP was doing to be way over the top?
maryferrell.org/showDoc.html?d…

Seemingly no area of foreign policy Kutner didn't have a hand in...

He also appeared in FBI documents as the publisher of a paper called "The Yugoslav Herald" which was published out of the offices of an extremist anti-communist group in Chicago. 🤷‍♂️
maryferrell.org/showDoc.html?d…

To point back to something up thread, Kutner's "Friends of the FBI" - a weird private org doing PR for a public agency - reminds us of the existence, today, of the similarly missioned "ICE Foundation".

Good breakdown here by @mossrobeson__

Some correspondence listed in his papers (at the Hoover Archives, somewhat telling in itself). Of course we don't know what's in the letters without looking but:

World Anti-Communist League, Ronald Reagan, William F. Buckley, Slava Stetsko (Ukrainian OUN)
pdf.oac.cdlib.org/pdf/hoover/kut…

So back to today:

Also actively working to release of Tshombe, who activities had helped the West reassert control over Congo and make one of the most promising countries on earth into the disaster it is today? William F. Buckley.

The article from CIA archives. Where else.
