mountains, snow, avalanches and climate at #ISSW2018

Now sitting in on a session with @oeav on excessive ski area development in Tirol.

Lots of ski areas in Tirol, more lifts planned as resorts try to outrace #globalwarming. But it’s too much, says @oeav - seele-der-alpen.at

A planned new law in Tirol would open a “back door” to new expansions and greenwash ski development, says @oeav president Andreas Ermacora.

Dear snow scientists: am I missing something at #issw2018? There is ALREADY detailed documentation of dramatic low-elevation snow decline. google.com/amp/s/psmag.co…

Here it sounds so abstract and distant but it’s already reality for many ski hills and communities. steiermark.orf.at/m/news/stories…

There’s ‘variability,’ and there are climate extremes that already have a direct and serious impact on ski communities.

Innsbruck = Breckenridge when it comes to parking & traffic ... #transportation madness in the anthropoid right

This reminds of the big Free Box in #telluride... #degrowth

All #risotto ...

Lunch break is over so back to #ISSW2018 and geeking out on snow and avalanche science!

Tough titles, but it’s all critical info about what happens to snow with #globalwarming. Snow turns into water (or glacial ice) and changes in the mountains will affect people far away.

Hmmm, what I’d like to see at #issw2020 is some interdisciplinary research on #snow and #globalwarming and discussion of cumulative effects. Too many silos ... #issw2018

... and from my old @Arapahoe_Basin stomping grounds, some info on avalanche control in the Steep Gullies. How many towers and feet of cable total @als_blog?

Looks like #drones, specialized apps and the cloud are all part of the future for avalanche safety #issw2018

... and field testing starts this season for wearable warning systems, with auditory and haptic signals. Very interesting (but no substitute for basic avalanche & mountain savvy. #issw2018

... it’s already been evaluated (previous tweet) in a virtual reality setting with a specially designed game. I have mixed feelings. How far are we willing to go with technology? #issw2018 ...

On the other hand, it’s a really cool idea!

This, apparently, is the Death Star for avalanches. @ me if you want to know more. #issw2018

Automatic people detection sounds like surveillance ... #skiing #avalanches #issw2018

Making snowflakes in a lab - totally geeking out at #issw2018!
