Spain’s new FM, Josep Borrell, had this to say in mid-December in the run-up to the Catalan election, with @KRLS Puigdemont already in exile & Oriol @junqueras in prison in Madrid:👇
On @KRLS Puigdemont: "In Belgium he’s got his friends from the Flemish nationalist party, which is the nearest thing to fascism that exists in Europe." elnacional.cat/ca/politica/bo…
On disinfecting #Catalonia:
"Stitching up wounds is all well and good… wounds have to be stitched up, it’s true. But before wounds are closed they must disinfected [laughter and applause]...
...Because if you stitch them up without disinfecting them, they rot. The social body must be healed. So the disinfectant must be well applied and then, naturally, the stitching must take place. Because a society can’t live if 40-odd percent of the people are convinced...
that they’d be better off out of it. The situation is too painful, too unstable. And if such a large proportion of people think, rightly or wrongly, that we’d be better off out of it, this is a sick country that must be healed."
On @junqueras:
“And Father Junqueras has just told us from prison [laughter, applause]... No, don’t laugh. I mean it with all due respect. Because when I see him...
...he reminds me of Father Rafel, who was the priest in my village [laughter]… It was exactly the same physical & mental architecture.”
Does new Spanish PM @sanchezcastejon know what he's doing with this appointment? Does he know what message he's transmitting? You bet he does. @Foreign_Cat
Such a controversial FM appointment can only be interpreted as a deliberate attempt to antagonise pro-independence bloc in #Catalonia, which lent PM Sánchez its support in no-confidence motion. Conclusion: Sánchez has no idea what he's dealing with in Catalonia & won't last long.

The one and only requirement of the Spanish Constitution & of the Statute of Catalonia is for the proposed candidate to be an elected MP and not to have lost his/her right to vote & be voted through a final judicial sentence.
If this requirement is fulfilled, nobody can stop the proposed candidate from attending the session.
