Solidarity & resistance can be simple, folks. But it does take speaking up, which I know can feel hard.
I’ve done this myself in various situations. One in particular stands out:
Police came on a BART train I was on and were going to take a man away (he was Black and developmentally disabled). He was terrified and started reciting a phone number, asking someone to please call his mother who would worry when he didn’t show up.
I loudly said, “he didn’t do anything!” Others chimed in. The police were still going to take him off the train. I stood. Others stood. All speaking loudly and firmly to the police. A few of us moved closer toward them.
I think it became obvious the cops would end up taking a few of us along with this poor man.
The police paused, released him, and left the train.
The man —shaken up of course— was at least able to go visit his mother.
Intervention matters. It is vital. Resist with all your might. Back someone else up.
Let’s take care of one another. Otherwise, the fascists win.
Addendum: why did police enter the train? Some asshole called them, saying there was a person causing a disturbance. What had the man been doing? Smiling. And singing quietly to himself.
Don’t be the person who calls. Please. Don’t collaborate with oppression.
late p.s.
my transit intervention experience was three or four years ago. Didn’t want folks to think this has only been happening since 2016.
