#DisclosuresTribunal Is about to resume with Ian Mallon, formerly of INM, to resume giving evidence, followed by journalist Paul Williams
#DisclosuresTribunal Counsel for INM points out this exchange yesterday
#DisclosuresTribunal INM counsel says the question of how responsible/irresponsible PW's articles were does NOT fall within the terms of reference. He says it's "not captured" by any of the TORs and says it's not a matter Oireachtas has asked the judge to report on
#DIsclosuresTribunal McD: If paper determined to publish article/s w/out going to McCabe, it indicated there was a broad feeling he was fair game for that..McD says this may be relevant to judge as to whether there was campaign to denigrate him in public by ref to D allegation
#DisclosuresTribunal McD raises claims about Martin Callinan allegedly told people in early 2014 about McCabe..and the fact a senior member of AGS seems to have played a pivotal role in the Williams' articles (Supt John O'Reilly was conduit btw PW and Mr D)...
#DisclosuresTribunal [cntd] McD says tribunal may see them as connected given allegation there was a campaign to raise the D allegation against McCabe with view to denigrate him in public eye.. McD suggests PW articles tends to support that proposition
#DisclosuresTribunal After some back and forth, McDowell says he'd like to see "where it gets us" and says he "can't cut it off". McDowell refers to the meeting that took place in Garda office in Harcourt St with INM execs after Gemma O'Doherty called to house of Martin Callinan
#DisclosuresTribunal Yesterday, Mallon told the tribunal this about a call he had with GO'D when she went to Callinan's house. Tribunal hears that GO'D wasn't at the house when he said this to her:
#DisclosuresTribunal Mallon is telling tribunal he "absolutely" didn't agree with O'D calling to MC's house. M: Somebody who's contactable through a press office directly, one would take that step first. I didn't know if she attempted to contact MC directly or went through GPO
#DisclosuresTribunal Mallon says he wasn't interested in why O'D was there that night..He said he was told MC's wife was distressed. Says he was informed by Tom Brady OD was at the house. Mallon says this was an "emergency" situation and he had to get O'D away from the house.
#DisclosuresTribunal Mark Harty SC, for O'Doherty, asks Mallon why wasn't he concerned about WHY O'D was at the house. Mallon: Because I received a call that the wife of the commissioner was distressed.
#DisclosuresTribunal Harty raises claim by O'D that he told her 'RTE would be on to her' and that she 'ruined everything'. Mallon I have no idea where that came from. That doesn't compute. Harty: INM counsel didn't challenge her that when she gave evidence to that effect
#DisclosuresTribunal Harty: You might not be able to assist us further but OD says that things went downhill for her in INM after that evening (of calling to MC's house) Were you infolved in the decision to make OD compulsory redundant? INM counsel objects to this question
#DisclosuresTribunal Judge: Are you pursuing the line that INM decided to get rid of OD because she had infringined on a relationship that was very valuable to INM and if you are in a position to provide any evidence...it you wanted to ask that I have no problem.
#DisclosuresTribunal Harty: In relation to the decision to send two editors to Harcourt Terrace to meet with Asst Comm and Supt Taylor (after O'D called to Callinan's house) - were you involved in that decision? Mallon: No.
#DisclosuresTribunal In relation to the decision as to who was made to be redudant, were you involved in those decisions? Mallon: I was involved in the voluntary redundancy processes in INM but when those became involuntay, I was not part of those decisions or process
#DisclosuresTribunal AOR counsel is asking Mallon about the video interview Paul Williams did with Ms D on March 8, 2014. AOR counsel says that on Monday Eavan Murray, of the Irish Sun, said when she met D family - Mrs D and Mr D were very concerned about the video.
#DisclosuresTribunal AOR counsel asks surely they relayed their concerns to INM also. AOR counsel seeks to find out who would have accessed the video. Tribunal has heard ppl who saw it - Ian Mallon, Dearbhail McDonald, Stephen Rae, Paul Williams and Caoimhe Gaskin (who edited it)
#DisclosuresTribunal Mallon said very few people would have had access to the video. Mallon confirms he thinks it was a digital file. Asked if it's possible other people in INM knew of video. Mallon: I doubt it, it would have been "in lodge"
#DisclosuresTribunal Counsel for AGS asks Mallon if he knows whether Ms D was given the video file, Mallon says he doesn't know
#DisclosuresTribunal INM counsel draws Mallon's attention to matters he can't recollect. Mallon points out how he's been out of newspapers for several years. [Tribunal has heard he's now communications consultant at UEFA]
#DisclosuresTribunal INM counsel drawing up O'D evidence and what he told the tribunal at that time re: O'D's redundancy.
#DisclosuresTribunal Mallon confirms to INM counsel that these figures would be correct and, he agrees with question from INM that his (counsel's) account accords with his recolleciton
#DisclosuresTribunal Mallon tells Leader, for tribunal, he doesn't know Supt John O'Reilly (who was conduit between Williams and Mr D). Mallon also confirms he doesn't know Eavan Murray and he doesn't know anyone in INM who might have told her about PW story before publication
#DisclosuresTribunal Paul Williams is know answering questions. Diarmaid McGuinness, for tribunal, is putting questions to him.
#DisclosuresTribunal McGuinness raises John Mooney's article in Sunday Times in November 2010. Asked was he aware of that story. PW says he would have been aware of what was in public domain. This is article: thetimes.co.uk/article/intern…
#DisclosureTribunal PW asked about his reaction to being named in Dail as someone who had pen points quashed.
#DisclosuresTribunal PW: I was surprised, I didn't see it coming..I can't remember the name of the TD...was it Joan Collins? I didn't know anything about it prior...I was surprised ..but I had nothing to hide.
#DisclosuresTribunal PW: It was in relation to an FCPN that I had done by the book, I appealed legitimately. PW is asked if he associated that with McCabe. PW: No, I never had any evidence that Sgt McCabe had anything to do with that.
#DisclosuresTribunal McG: But did you speculate that one of the w/blowers had leaked that - about you? PW: No, I didn't equate Deputy Collins with either of the w/blowers and I didn't know who was responsible.
#DisclosuresTribunal PW: I had nothing to hide, I didn't do anything wrong. It was out there in the public domain, so what?
#DisclosuresTribunal McGuinness raises Colum Kenny article from March 2 2014 (a week before PW went to Ms D house) in which he named McCabe as having been subject to a serious accusation and how matter went to DPP. McG: Were you aware? PW: No I never saw that story.
#DisclosuresTribunal McG: So that wasn't a source of the story for you? PW says he's outlined this already to the tribunal - via Supt John O'Reilly
#DisclosuresTribunal [NOTE: More on Colum Kenny's article - and evidence - here: broadsheet.ie/2018/06/04/i-t…]
#DisclosuresTribunal PW is repeating the D family told him Eavan Murray and Debbie McCann had called to house before day he interviewed Ms D (on March 8) (it's EM's evidence she visited AFTER Williams' visit]
#DisclosuresTribunal PW concedes D family may have said it to him on March 5 (when he went down first to meet parents ahead of interview)
#DisclosuresTribnal McGuinness refers to evidence of Colum Kenny (that two journalists told him McCAbe was under investigation for child abuse) McG indicates Paul Reynolds is one of these journalists.
#DisclosuresTribunal PW repeating he never heard any specific allegation about McCabe before he met the D family.
#DisclosuresTribunal PW says he does know Debbie McCann, of the IMOS, but says he didn't tell her about his Ms D story.
#DisclosuresTribunal He also says he didn't tell Eavan Murray. He says he did work in News International for two years so would have known Fergus O'Shea (who tribunal has been told sent EM to D house after he learned about PW's pending article on Ms D in March 2014)
#DisclosuresTribunal Williams has told McGuinness that he's 30-odd years in journalism and he was taught that that the most important thing is getting an exclusive so he wouldn't be sharing info about his stories
#DisclosuresTribunal Williams says it was agreed that he'd do a video with Ms D. McGuinness asks if this was agreed on March 5 (when he first went to D house). PW says he doesn't know when it was agreed but it had been.
#DisclosuresTribunal Are you clear on March 8 that the D family categorically said two journalists had already called to the house - Debbie McCann and Eavan Murray [Murray claims she was the THIRD journalist and EM claims D family told her they had concerns abut the video]
#DisclosuresTribunal PW says that this is his evidence. [There's been a debate about EM's evidence. INM counsel runs through his version of the timeline of events and says it couldn't be the case EM had a conversation about PW's video with the D family]
#DisclosuresTribunal McGuinness now going to the video. PW says he had it on his laptop and he's given it to the tribunal.
#DisclosuresTribunal McGuinness asks PW if he gave a copy of the video to Ms D? PW: No I did not, I don't believe so
#DisclosuresTribunal McG going through PW's phone records. On March 10, 2014, PW called Ms D at 10.41 (8mins 31 secs)...folllowed by call to Dave Taylor (almost 2mins) at 11.31am. PW did call Taylor on March 7. It was six seconds long. PW says this was about another matter/story
#DisclosuresTribunal PW again says he never said to Taylor 'guess where I am?' on day he interviewed Ms D - as alleged by Taylor. [NOTE: Phone records tribunal has seen don't show PW and Taylor had phone contact on March 8]
#DisclosuresTribunal Taylor did call PW the day (March 6) after he had been to D house first (March 5). It was a five minute call at 17.52pm. Asked if he would have told Taylor then "guess where I HAVE been" - PW says no.
#DisclosuresTribunal Taylor also called PW on March 7 2014 (day before he interviewed Ms D on March 8) at 14.54pm. It was 2.22mins long. Asked what this was about. PW says this was likely to be about a particular story he was working on
#DisclosuresTribunal PW said in regards to this story legal letters were flying around (it was to do with a fraud case). McGuinness asks if PW could write down more details of this for the tribunal
#DisclosuresTribunal McG says the record of PW calling Taylor on March 10, 2014 appears to accord with his (PW's) evidence that he called Taylor about a week after speaking to Ms D. PW agrees. Later that day, phone record shows PW had two calls with Mr D.
#DisclosuresTribunal Tribunal has already heard that one of questions PW claims he asked Taylor was: Was Ms D allegation placed on PULSE?
#DisclosuresTribunal [NOTE: PW has said this was an allegation made by Ms D. He said Taylor did confirm to him that the matter wasn't on PULSE]
#DisclosuresTribunal Tribunal sees document which shows Mr D did a search for the matter on PULSE on March 23 2014
#DisclosuresTribunal Asked if Mr D told him about this, PW said no.
#DisclosuresTribunal Williams being asked about call with NOS in February 2014 (after no record of calls since April 2013). Williams says it was to do with security matters around him at the time.
#DisclosuresTribunal PW says, of these phone calls, there were no discussions about McCabe
#DisclosuresTribunal McG: Dearbhail McDonald said she was involved in stress-testing. McG asks PW what he knew of this. PW: I came back, I met them, went to some of senior excs in INM that week..it was there decision to run the story...I understood they were stress testing it..
#DisclosuresTribunal [cntd] PW: I don't know what Dearbhail McDonald did..I never discused it with her. PW says he didn't know what she did until he saw statements from tribunal in recent weeks.
#DisclosuresTribunal Asked if it changed much (the original version V published version of first article), PW says he can't really recall but he explains lawyers go through copy and can make changes.
#DisclosuresTirbunal McG: We haven't been provided with the original story - can you make that available? PW: I don't know if I have it...PW says the published article wouldn't have been hugely different to what appeared in the paper
#DisclosuresTribunal PW: The story wasn't so much about her and what she claimed to have happened. It was about the investigation and her problems with the investigation and it was always going to be heavily anonymised
#DisclosuresTribunal McGuinness has put to PW that he and Martin Callinan had penalty points quashed and this had been publicised. McG also points out Debbie McCann had points quashed. McG suggests it's a coincidence that both he and McCann went to D house
#DisclosuresTribunal PW: You can draw a narrative..however that is not the reason I was up there...
#DisclosuresTribunal McGuinness goes back to phone records and PW says he may have called Taylor before publication of the first article to see if there was anything more he could get, any more detail regarding the DPP's decision re: McCabe.
#DisclosuresTribunal McG points out there was a text btw NOS & PW on day PW's first article was published. PW has told the tribunal that if he had been neg briefed by either Taylor/Callinan or NOS, he would tell the tribunal as they've waived privilege. "I have nothing to hide"
#DisclosuresTribunal Also, earlier, PW says when he put queries to Taylor, after interviewing Ms D, PW says "it was all fairly straight". Asked what he means about this, PW says "he didn't start gossiping or anything like that"
#DisclosuresTribunal PW points out he went to trouble of giving phone records to tribunal - which he was "loathe" to do - because of the specific allegation made by Taylor
#DisclosuresTribunal [NOTE: Taylor has alleged PW called him from Ms D's house and that he was going to write a damaging article about McCabe. More here: broadsheet.ie/2017/07/18/tha… ]
#DisclosuresTribunal Counsel for Taylor puts to PW that Taylor claims that he told PW (before his visit to D house) that there had been an allegation of sexual assault against McCabe, the DPP recommended no prosecution and as a result that McCabe had an agenda against AGS
#DisclosuresTribunal PW says this is incorrect. PW says he's been eviscerated on social media and by his own colleagues because of the implication that he was part of some smear campaign
#DisclosuresTribunal PW says reason he eneded up in D house was because he got call from Supt O'Reilly. Says when he went down to Ds, they were asking why journalists had arrived at their door unsolicited and asked how did they know Ms D's name, how did they know Ms D's address
#DisclosuresTribunal Counsel for Taylor draws up Taylor's evidence previously:
#DisclosuresTribunal PW repeats categorically that he didn't speak to Taylor about Ms D until he (PW) rang him and put specific questions to him about the matter. These questions:
#DisclosuresTribunal [NOTE: Michael McDowell SC, for Sgt McCabe, told the tribunal - before Taylor's counsel started asking questions - that he has no questions for Paul Williams]
#DisclosuresTribunal The tribunal has broke for an hour.
#DisclosuresTribunal Paul Williams has resumed giving evidence
#DisclosuresTribunal Taylor's counsel putting it to PW that Taylor is NOT saying PW was part of a smear campaign - that he didn't know he was part of a campaign - but that PW was negatively briefed by Taylor
#DisclosuresTribunal Taylor's counsel saying T claims he briefed 11 journalists and of 3 attended D house. Says of Debbie McCann and Eavan Murray - prior to going to D house they were given negative info about McCabe.
#DisclosuresTribunal Taylor's counsel: Both of them have given evidence that they were aware that there was an allegaiton of a sex assault before travelling to Cavan
#DisclosuresTribunal Taylor's counsel: Out of 3 who travelled, you're one with most contact with gardai.
#DisclosuresTribunal Taylor's counsel: Rather than talking to ppl on front line, you have direct line to Comm (Callinan) and Dep Comm (NOS) at time. You could talk personally on phone to Callinan and NOS. Is that correct? PW: Yes
#DisclosuresTribunal Taylor's counsel puts to PW said a local Det Supt [John O'Reilly] phoned him. PW says he's already explained the whole run-up to his visit to D house. Says Ms D had been visited at her home by two journalists. Says: It's all in my testimony from last year
#DisclosuresTribunal PW says it would be unfair to drag O'Reilly in and accuse him of being some kind of conspirator. PW says O'Reilly didn't want to know about it.
#DisclosuresTribunal Taylor's counsel puts to PW that give he'd been speaking to O'Reilly, that McCabe allegation was widespread in newsrooms..it's unusual that "the one man whose given the interview knows nothing about the allegation" PW:
I've explained all this chairman
#DisclosuresTribunal Taylor's counsel repeats that Taylor says he neg briefed PW. PW denies this (again. PW: Our positions are irreconcilable and there's nothing I can do about it
#DisclosuresTribunal [NOTE: Tribunal has already heard that Taylor claims the questions PW claims he asked Taylor were never asked because he (PW) knew the answer already via Taylor]
#DisclosuresTribunal Mark Harty, for Gemma O'Doherty, asking PW questions. PW confirms that OD contacted him 7/8 years ago in relation to Fr Niall Molloy story.
#DisclosuresTribunal Harty: When you were giving evidence on Day 11, you were questioned by Conor Dignam about OD..."I think she is a fellow journalist, a reporter. PW replied: If she is a journalist. PW confirms that's correct
#DisclosuresTribunal Harty reads out how PW said: I don't know her.. I never worked with her. PW says this is correct. Harty says they had been in contact on Fr Niall Molloy matter. PW explains this was in context of his 2011 book Bad Fellas
#DisclosuresTribunal Harty taking issue with PW saying "If she is a journalist." PW says he thought she left journalism in 2013/2014...Harty says she wrote an article about his points being quashed. PW says he can't recollect. PW: "I'm not familiar with OD's CV"
#DisclosuresTribunal PW says from 2005/2006 a narrative emerged in which crime journalists started to be demonised by colleagues in the business in a very unfair way. PW includes Michael O'Toole, of the Star, and Paul Reynolds, of RTE, in this group of crime corrs being demonised
#DisclosuresTribunal PW is making this comment in terms of being asked about what he told the tribunal last summer: See here. PW has told the tribunal he didn't mean Gemma O'Doherty was one of these people in the group of "politicians, criminals, subversives"
#DisclosuresTribunal PW tells Alison O'Reilly's counsel that the D family never asked for a copy of the video and never complained about the video.
#DIsclosuresTribunal AOR counsel asks PW - in normal practice - would Garda Press Office confirm an allegation had been made against someone and file went to the DPP. Asked if this is acceptable..PW says he can't say if it's acceptable, says he asked Taylor this and he confirmed
#DisclosuresTribunal AOR counsel puts to PW that that in itself could be regarded as a negative briefing. PW says people are arrested all the time..and their names are in the paper all the time.
#DisclosuresTribunal O'Higgins, for the gardai, asks PW if it would have been responsible journalism if he told Ms D that he wouldn't interview her because McCabe was a national hero. Also asks if it'd have been responsible to decline i/v because she was critical of AGS. PW: No.
#DisclosuresTribunal PW says journalists have to talk to eveyrone who comes to talk to them
#DisclosuresTribunal PW says that in video - which he has given to the tribunal - it's seen that he challenged Ms D on her motivation
#DisclosuresTribunal O'Higgins says Dearbhail McDonald has told the tribunal that she made contact with a representative of McCabe's legal team to fact check PW's story before publication. PW says he didn't know this until April of this year
#DisclosuresTribunal McGuinness now draws up the poison pen letter sent to INM in 2014 and Prime Time also got which - McG points out, the tribunal got from RTE 'belatedly' [Katie Hannon referred to a few lines of it in July 2016] PW says first time he saw it was via tribunal.
#DisclosuresTribunal Tribunal hears Sgt McCabe, when interviewed by Sean Guerin on April 1, 2014, read a fragment of this for Guerin. McGuinness says McCabe told Guerin his counsel got it from INM.
#DisclosuresTribunal PW says he read in tribunal papers that McCabe said his counsel McDowell got this letter from Dearbhail McDonald. McGuinness said he's given a statement to the tribunal of his understanding of this.
#DisclosuresTribunal This is what Dearbhail McDonald told the tribunal yesterday - she said the first she saw it was via the tribunal
#DisclosuresTribunal Paul Reynolds, of RTE, now giving evidence. Says he had a personably and professional relationship with NOS and Callinan. PR says he met Taylor when he became the head of the Garda Press Office.
#DisclosuresTribunal PR: John Gilligan (prev press officer) arranged for number of crime correspondents to meet Taylor (when he became the new head of press office)
#DisclosuresTribunal While being asked about his knowledge of McCabe, PR says he thinks he might have read John Mooney's article about McCabe in Sunday Times in November 2010. PR thinks he prob read it at the time.
#DisclosuresTirbunal PR: I think I first heard there might have been an allegation of abuse against McCabe in 2013..heard there had been an allegation, but nothing to do. Then heard four facts - allegation, investigation, went to DPP, an DPP ruled no prosecution.
#DisclosuresTribunal PR: Once I heard the DPP's ruling, I felt it had nothing to do with me as a reporter
#DisclosuresTribunal Leader: Did you hear it again? PR: I may have...I always heard it in context of DPP ruling no prosecution..PR: Once I was told the DPP said there was nothing, I knew there was nothing. We'd have known if there was a court case, an arrest, etc.
#DisclosuresTribunal Leader: Was it ever suggestsed in 2013 that McCabe was somewhat embittered as a result of the D investigation? PR: No, and that wouldn't have made sense to me...because he was exonerated
#DisclosuresTribunal Leader reads out Taylor's evidence re: Paul Reynolds:
#DisclosuresTribunal Paul Reynolds now outlining how hectic/busy crimes scenes are. Says there's a "huddle' where microphones are set. PR says he generally asks all the questions as he's on radio and TV.
#DisclosuresTribunal PR: Idea press officer would sidle over, come over and try to talk to about something different - it doesn't make sense. How was I separated from other journalists for this particular negative briefing? I can't see how it's possible
#DisclosuresTribunal Leader goes to extensive phone contacts between PR and Taylor. PR: I'm the Crime Corr for RTE: I cover crime and justice stories on TV, radio, online...on a 24 basis... There are organised crime feuds, murders, gun seizures
#DisclosuresTribunal PR says he does on average 200 TV stories every year
#DisclosuresTribunal PR says calls with Taylor did not include conversations about Ms D. PR: I don't even know who she is
#DisclosuresTribunal Leader says Colum Kenny has nominated Paul Reynolds as being one of the journalists who told him that he (PR) suggested to him (CK) that CK talk to gardai "up there" about McCabe - in early 2014.
#DisclosuresTribunal PR says that last week was first he heard about this. PR says after seeing CK's statement he was able to check details and says he wasn't at the committee meeting at which CK said he spoke to him.
#DisclosuresTribunal PR says he was ill that afternoon. PR is categorical that this alleged conversation never happened.
#DisclosuresTribunal PR: "The man is mistaken... For the past five years, Mr Kenny has been writing disparagingly and factually incorrectly about me."
#DisclosuresTribunal [MORE on Kenny's evidence here: broadsheet.ie/2018/06/04/i-t…
#DisclosuresTribunal Leader is now reading out a report by Paul Reynolds from February 24, 2014 about O'Mahoney investigation into penalty points and Sgt McCabe. Leader: Where did you get your information?
#DisclosuresTribunal Paul Reynolds says he had sight of the direction given to McCabe and he based his report on that. PR says he wrote the story for RTE online that afternoon but he also later sought a response on the record from Garda Press Office and from McCabe
#DisclosuresTribunal PR says he got a response from Garda HQ via Supt Taylor - which he incorporated into the story later. PR says he tried to get response from McCabe...Says after McCabe gave response to Prime Time which he used to update the report again
#DisclosuresTribunal PR says Taylor's response to PR was an official, on the record response from Supt Taylor
#DisclosuresTribunal This is what John O'Mahoney told tribunal last week about PR's report
#DisclosuresTribunal Leader draws up an email from Tony Connaughton in Garda Press Office to John Burke of RTE on Feb 28 2014 in which he said: "Garda Comm wishes to confirm that he did NOT put any remarks into the public domain" Conn also told Burke GSOC was looking into matter
#DisclosuresTribunal Leader: Taylor was making it clear to you McCabe did not cooperate (with JOM investigation). PR: I was never briefed by Taylor that he refused to cooperate. I never reported he refused to cooperate.
#DisclosuresTribunal [cntd] PR: I was given a statement from Garda HQ that the Commissioner (Martin Callinan) said McCabe didn't cooperate. PR says Callinan issued a direction, which speaks for itself, Callinan has his position and McCabe has his own position
#DisclosuresTribunal PR now being asked about the controversy over the O'Higgins report. PR: I did pay heed to it (the stories by Mick Clifford and Katie Hannon) because.. it became a public controversy in relation to whether Sgt McCabe's motivation was questioned...
#DisclosuresTribunal [cntd] PR: ...there was selected transcripts leaked and it became a story..I made my own inquiries...then I discovered there were more transcripts and I saw O'Higgins dealt with the issue...that the whole issue had been ventilated...
#DisclosuresTribunal [cntd] PR:...and last word on it was O'Higgins was "that's fine" and he called Noirin O'Sullivan as a witness later..the matter had been clarified at the O'Higgins. [NOTE: PR reported on this here: broadsheet.ie/2016/05/17/cla…
#DisclosuresTribunal PR says he never linked the Ms D matter with O'Higgins - following his reading of the O'Higgins transcripts
#DisclosuresTribunal Leader is now asking questions about the May 9, 2014 reports by PR on O'Higgins' report. PR says he won't tell tribunal source of the report but he says his reports were based on the final O'Higgins' report
#DisclosuresTribunal Leader listing the various radio reports PR did that day
#DisclosuresTribunal Leader also listing the various TD reports
#DisclosuresTribunal Tribunal is now hearing Paul Reynolds' radio broadcasts
#DisclosuresTribunal Transcripts of some of PR's reports can be found here: disclosuretribunal.ie/en/DIS/Final%2…
#DisclosuresTribunal hears this bit
#DisclosuresTribunal [NOTE: PR's reports are long - he goes through details of each chapter in O'Higgins report]
#DisclosuresTribunal Also hears interview Lorcan Roche Kelly gave to Keelin Shanley on May 9, 2016, in which he said "failings are nothing new" re: O'Higgins report.
#DisclosuresTribunal Mr Roche Kelly had been married to Sylvia Roche Kelly - who was murdered by Gerry McGrath while he was on bail. LRK spoke to Keelin Shanley about his serious frustrations with AGS.
#DisclosuresTribunal LRK told Kelly the gardai approached their failings by denying the failings occurred at all. LRK compared it to Hillsborough - deny a problem exists at all and hope the problem goes away. More on this case here: broadsheet.ie/2016/05/30/i-k…
#DisclosuresTribunal LRK also told Shanley: The gardai are the state...as long as I'm in the state, gardai have power over me. LRK also said he wasn't satisfied but not surprised with findings of report. [NOTE: While this is obv an RTE report, it's not a Paul Reynolds' report]
#DisclosuresTribunal Now hearing Shanley speak to Mick Clifford, of the Irish Examiner.
#DisclosuresTribunal In this radio interview Clifford highlighted how it was being reported that OH found no corruption. Clifford distinguished what some ppl think is corruption (backhander) and what corruption means under Garda Charter.
#DisclosuresTribunal Clifford told Shanley there were interpretations "being put on this" Clifford warned about spin and he said he would caution people to wait until the full report came out. Shanley said they [RTE] had seen quotes.
#DisclosuresTribunal hears another report from PR in which he focused on allegations of "corruption". PR reported OH didn't find scintilla of evidence to support allegation of corruption against the Commissioner [Martin Callinan]. This was about a promotion McC complained about
#DisclosuresTribunal in this report PR highlighted criticisms of snr gardai -including Callinan, Michael Clancy and Noel Cunningham - PR reported in each case they were unfounded and those against whom were made have had to live many years under strain
#DisclosuresTribunal Now hears report RTE's Philip Boucher Hayes' "Late Late Show" report on O'Higgins.
#DisclosuresTribunal Transcript of Philip Bouchers Hayes's report here: broadsheet.ie/2016/05/10/som…
#DisclosuresTribunal This is how PBH reported about allegation of "corruption"
#DisclosuresTribunal This is how PBH reported on allegations withdrawn by McCabe
#DisclosuresTribunal This is how PBH summed up his report:
#DisclosuresTribunal The tribunal has finished listening to RTE's radio reports and it's finished for the day. It will resume tomorrow when the tribunal will hear RTE's TV reports of May 9, 2014
#DisclosuresTribunal This is who is scheduled for the rest of the week. Tribunal is not sitting next Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday
