Now imagine this happening every day, in your country, to mamas who didn’t hurt authorities or harm someone else’s children. Imagine a mama, any mama, having her baby ripped from her arms. She is taken to a cell to be detained, and her baby is taken elsewhere.

She probably doesn’t know where her baby is or when she will see her baby again. Think of how the babies must feel – alone, frightened, and sad.

This is your legacy, America.

Whether you agree or not this is how your country - once the birthplace of the Dream – is now treating families who cross her borders. Whether seeking asylum or illegally crossing the border fellow human beings are suffering this deep pain.

When you remove a child from their guardians and place them in a detention center or abandoned Wal*Mart something happens in the child’s brain. This kind of deep trauma acts like an injury that prevents the brain from developing normally.

If you add up too many of these Childhood Traumatic Events it predisposes a person, in adulthood, to increased risk of mental illness, addiction, suicide, and violent behaviour.

You, America–birthplace of the Dream– are complicit in these life-altering effects for a generation of people. These families have left homes rife with violence, threats of murder, poverty, hopelessness. They have knocked on the door of Lady Liberty and she has eaten their young.

"We aren’t like this, this isn’t our President!" The world is watching the death of all the things that make America beautiful. You are a prosperous nation that has, in the past, been giving to those in need.

I know, based on what I see on social media, that this Welcoming America is the America you want to be. I cannot stress enough that this is the time to act. No more Twitter outrage. Your screams here are silent, unending as they may be.

Your online indignation isn’t changing policies or hearts or minds. He IS your president, and you ARE like this until you are not.

Hit the streets, America. Rise up. Be peaceful but be heard. Boycott companies, gather together, protest.

Do what the Land of the Free, Home of the Brave is good at. Get mad and DO. Show up en masse in front of the White House. Scream and shout outside the offices of your senators. Make phone calls. For the sake of your country, your legacy, and the world - ACT. The time is now.
