I deleted a tweet about feeling blue. It’s a valid feeling that we all have sometimes. But I didn’t want to show that side of myself, b/c of the stigma.
But then I thought about it & I’m 100% sure others have days like this. It’s just that we all go around pretending we’re ok.
We force wellness &resilience as if it’s not okay to feel UNwell. I’m here to tell you that even successful people who seem to have their shit together struggle with depression. And that’s okay. There shouldn’t be such a stigma to talking about how we really feel.#ItsOkNotToBeOk
If you are feel sad or depressed it doesn’t mean you are broken or weak; It means you’re human.
Here’s where my head is today:
I know why doctors kill themselves. The world takes advantage of altruistic well-meaning souls. People take and take and take until you are nothing but a depressed shell of a human curled in the fetal position in your bed.
Until we can normalize mental health illness the way we normalize hypertension and diabetes, until we can talk about feeling sad without feeling like somehow we are doing something wrong, people won’t get the help they need. #ItsOkNotToBeOk
The next time u’re sad &questioning your life choices, the next time u’re curled up in your bed feeling blue, the next time u think you’re “less than” for not feeling like the happy well-adjusted versions of themselves that others project to the world, remember: #ItsOkNotToBeOk
If you are sad or hopeless or blue I urge you to share. And I urge all of us to hear each other without labeling or stigmatizing. #ItsOkNotToBeOk
#Wellness is fine&dandy, but let’s realize that #UNwellness is a normal part of life &NOT a character flaw of the person feeling it.
