In the next few tweets, I will write a short post on something many of us have seen either in ourselves or in someone we know- they have something in their tummy that comes out and go back in when pressed.

The medical term for it is “#Hernia”.
Pls follow this short thread.

1/
If you will like to join in this discussion, or you have any suggestions or questions relating to this topic, don’t hesitate to tweet at me @DrOlufunmilayo, or simply use the hashtag #Hernia, once I see it, I will get back to you as best and as fast as I can.

#Hernia
2/
What is a #Hernia?

A hernia is a term that refers to the protrusion of the body contents/organs through the body wall because of a weakness in the muscles of that area (which should ideally prevent such a protrusion from happening).

#Hernia
3/
How does a #Hernia happen?

Normally, the tummy wall has several layers of muscles, which keeps the intestine and internal organs in place. If, for any reason, there is a weak point in the muscles then part of the intestines can push through causing a bulge.

#Hernia
4/
Why is a #Hernia dangerous?
Generally hernias are not immediately life threatening. They are usually harmless most times.

But don’t get carried away, that can change depending on the size of the hernia, the location and sudden trapping of the intestine/organs in the hernia.

5/
I will explain what I mean.
What happens in a #hernia is that there’s an opening in the tummy/groin that allows the intestine to go in and come out repeatedly without any pain or problems initially.

As time goes on, it may suddenly happen when the intestine gets trapped.

6/
Now the implication of a part of the intestine getting trapped in a #hernia is that portion of the intestine may become deprived of blood supply which gives oxygen and nutrients, and IF nothing is done to correct that as an emergency, that part of the intestine will die off.

7/
And IF that part of the intestine dies off (what doctors call ‘ischemia’), the dead bowel has to be cut off, otherwise the life of the person is at risk.

Because that bowel can get infected and with the spread of infection to the body, a sudden death is inevitable.

#Hernia
8/
So in simple terms, while a #hernia usually doesn’t tend to cause problems and can easily be pressed back in after it comes out and goes back in after you lie down, please note once you have a hernia, it is BEST to speak with your doctor to assess the risks I just spoke of.

8/
What are the different types of #Hernia?

Inguinal hernias- around the groin, commoner in men
Femoral hernias- in the upper thighs, commoner in women
Umbilical hernias- around the navel, common in children and overweight adults
Incisional hernia- common after a surgical scar

9/
Pls note umbilical #hernia which is quite common in children and overweight adults.

Generally it’s usually harmless and there’s no need worry as it resolves on its own by 1 year old. But if it persist beyond 5 years of age or if they are very large, treatment is advised.

9/
What causes a hernia?
Hernias are caused by a combination of muscle weakness and strain. Depending on its cause, a hernia can develop quickly or over a long period.

Common causes of muscle weakness include:
Age
Chronic cough
Being born with tummy wall weakness
Injury/Surgery

9/
Factors that strain the tummy muscles and may cause a #hernia include:

Pregnancy especially if twins or more
Constipation
Obesity
Lifting heavy weights
Fluid in the abdomen like in liver/heart failure
Previous abdominal surgery
Persistent coughing

#Hernia
10/
What are the symptoms of a #hernia?

Generally painless, but may be uncomfortable
Reducible swelling on coughing, sneezing, laughing or lifting heavy objects
Belly button swelling on child crying

Usually becomes painful when it gets trapped and it’s a sign of emergency.

11/
How is a #hernia diagnosed?

Diagnosis is usually made based on examining the person. It rarely requires any fanciful investigations. It’s quite easy to identify by a doctor.

Sometimes though, If your child has an umbilical hernia, your doctor may perform an ultrasound.

12/
How is a #hernia treated?

A hernia can be treated using lifestyle measures and/or with surgery.

Lifestyle measures are usually advised if the hernia is small and not problematic, but once it becomes large, embarrassing, problematic or disturbing, surgery is advised.

13/
Lifestyle measures used to prevent or manage hernias include the following

Stop smoking- it can cause chronic cough
Avoid constipation- take lots of water, fruits and vegetables to avoid straining in toilet
Avoid lifting heavy objects
Cut down your weight

#hernia
12/
Surgical options to treating a hernia are:
Open surgery using a mesh.
Laparoscopic or keyhole surgery

Open surgery requires a longer recovery process, up to six weeks. Laparoscopic surgery has a much shorter recovery time, but the risk of your hernia reoccurring is higher.

13/
Thanks for your time.
And I do hope this little short post was helpful in sharing information on #Hernia.

Please kindly retweet for others to see.
And do have an amazing weekend ahead.
Cheers 🥂

For people who can’t be bothered about all the permutations and technicalities of which genotypes should (or should not) marry, this is ALL the genotype advice you need in one sentence:

IF your genotype is not AA, marry an AA partner.

That’s your best bet.
End of advice.
Or better still,

Regardless of what your genotype is,
Marry an AA partner.

Irrespective of the permutations and your own genotype, an AA partner is your best option.
I hope that’s simple enough.
Thanks for your time.

Now retweet for others to be aware.
And quite obviously, even if you are AA yourself, your best option is to marry an AA partner.

So bottom line, for everyone out there,
Regardless of your genotype,
Your best option is to marry an AA partner.

An AA partner is the best genotype to combine with.
However you see it.

In the following tweets I will address an issue which I’ve heard two similar stories about and I have had to apologise to the people involved and also offer a form of ‘explanation’ on behalf of the doctors involved.

Please read this story and hopefully we all learn.
#Chaperone
Case 1: A man in his 40s went to a hospital and saw a young female doctor because he’s been having more frequent urination and waking up at night a lot to urinate.

The lady asked to check his prostate by putting her fingers in his anus, and he felt very awkward.
#Chaperone
He claimed (may not be true) the lady basically just told him “You need to pull your trousers and I need to check your prostate by putting my finger in your anus” and didn’t offer him any form of witness to make the procedure comfortable for him.
But he had it done.

I have lived in UK a few years now and NEVER has my bank ever charged me one penny for bank transfer.
NEVER. NOT ONCE.

I’m sorry. But that 52 naira 50kobo that Nigerian banks deduct per transaction, what exactly is it for?

Why is no one speaking out against this blatant fraud?
Next is the fraudulent “Card Maintenance Fees” by our Nigerian banks. Please how are you maintaining a card that lives in my wallet?

I have about 3-4 UK Bank Cards here. Both credit cards and debit cards.
I have NEVER paid any such thing as a “Card Maintenance Fee”.
NEVER EVER.
The Nigerian Banking Sector is an unfortunately over-bloated industry that thrives on systemically entrenched policies that terribly defrauds us Nigerians and lives on cheating the average citizen of the hard earned money that is entrusted in their care to help save and invest.

I firmly believe the Medical And Dental Council of Nigeria needs to start punishing PUBLICLY medical malpractice.

A country where medical professionals can do what they like with NO FEAR of consequences or jail time or licenses withdrawn is a dangerous country for its citizens.
There’s a healthy level of caution that needs to be in every medical professional. You must approach our job with the FULL understanding that your actions and our decisions can be investigated and will be investigated should anything go wrong.

This has to be clear.
Medical professionals deal with human lives, and not something that is easily replaceable should it get lost.

One of the many ways to step up the standard of professionalism and quality of care from health workers is to make it clear there will be punishment for malpractice.

Someone sent me a copy of trash that has been spreading round on WhatsApp groups and I think I should address it. You may have been unlucky to see it in one way or the other.

But here I’ve posted it.

“If you have sex with a man, his DNA lives in you forever”

THAT IS A LIE pls!
Then it goes ahead to talk about an imaginary research that has NO names of researchers and NO journals stated where it was published. This is a red flag. Shows you it is scam.

A simple way to recognise #FakeNews is the total absence of verifiable sources of information posted.
“Anytime you have sex with a man you become one with that man (spiritually too) and carry the man’s DNA”

This is an unfortunate mixture of bias with silly nonsense. There’s NO scientific research that is interested in “spiritual” joining of people thru sex. Whatever that means.

To boys who tell ladies they are having very severe stomach pains from not having sex:
Your day of reckoning has come 😂😂

That line is an ABSOLUTE lie 😂😂

No man ever gets severe acute stomach ache from not having sex.
And NO, not having sex has NO LONG TERM DAMAGES to a man.
I understand as a part of some imaginary bro code, I shouldn’t put this information out there 😂😂😂

But I’m sorry, I’m just a messenger doing the work of the Lord 😂

The story that a man will be having very severe stomach ache that can only be relieved by sex is a total lie 🌚
What some men term as “blue balls” is actually a feeling of sexual frustration and dull discomfort due to fluid congestion when a man gets really aroused sexually.

It’s a normal restlessness and discomfort that goes with sexual release- it’s NOT a life threatening situation.
