North Tyneside Council meeting of the cabinet, 25 June due to start at 6pm.
Many items on the agenda this evening. Item 5(c) involves the introduction of Alternate Weekly Bin Collections Plans. #WeeklyBins #NorthTyneside
I will be live blogging this meeting of North Tyneside Council. So stay tuned for further updates.
Good turnout despite the warm sunny weather outside!
Alternate Weekly Bin report being discussed now. Lead by Councillor Carl Johnson.
'North Tyneside worst council in Tyne and Wear' for recycling says Johnson. #AlternativeWeeklyBin
'The introduction will bring us in line with our council region partners' and 75% of English councils, who currently operate AWB.
Johnson confident that the introduction will be implemented 'successfully'.
Councillor Bell questions the safety of overly large bins.
The question if heavier penalties for fly-tipping has also been asked of councillor Johnson.
More details to come out in recent weeks after 'looking at policy'.
Lot of engagement with the issue amongst public during consultation phase.
'Not a financial issue but an ecological issue'.
There is a real need for North Tyneside Council to improve recycling, says deputy mayor.
1.2(1) approved by all of cabinet.
The implementation of Alternate Weekly Bin Collections will go ahead.
There will be larger bins available to North Tyneside residents to deal with the switch to #AWB.
Councillor Johnson highlights the dramatic rising costs of waste disposal. From £44 per tonne in 2007 to £122 per tonne currently.
Recycling only £12.81 currently. Cabinet agree that there needs to be a shift from refuse to recycling. #AWB
Deputy Mayor says it's not about the money. Although the £3.4 million from national Government to subsidise weekly collections has now been exhausted and will not be renewed. #AWB
Speaking after the meeting, Johnson reassured me that job losses in waste disposal would come from voluntary redundancies. #AWB
Not great, but improving: the % of waste in North Tyneside that is recycled or re-used. Below UK average, but forecast to match North East levels.
The meeting has concluded. Information will be distributed in July, with the introduction of #AWB to commence in August.
Stay tuned for further updates and reaction from North Tyneside residents.
North Tyneside residents... do you support the move to fortnightly bin collections? #AWB #NorthTyneside #Bin
