Everyone can help preserve native and local plant diversity in their garden.
Preservation is important because after 10,000 years of co-evolving with humans, plant genes are key archives of natural and cultural information. Nice to see this @michaelpollan quote here at @arche__noah
The #rightsfornature movement is also playing out in the plant preservation community. And aside from their own intrinsic right to exist, they have so much to tell us!
They also search out old fruit trees that were once commonly used (until the 50s) as local food sources. Plums, apples, pears. Used to be 2,000 common varieties, now just 20 in supermarkets
It's called Streuobst (scatter-fruit) and recently a local juice producer started using some of it to make delish sparkling cider, not too sweet. Nice use for #kulturpflanzen
It was great to see this @michaelpollan quote here, on how the ordering of a garden reminds of the evolutionary barter between people and plants.
