When I was comducting research on a preliminary thesis topic, I reviewed Georgia's #census records. Let me tell you what I found.

I found records of interracial marriages between Cherokee women and African men where the census taker changed the wife's ethnicity to Negro after the marriage.

In changing the ethnicity of the Indigenous Woman, the census-taker effectively reduced her status from 2nd class citizen (within the new United States of course) to non-existent.

Further elimination of Indigenous women from census was reflected in the interracial unions with white men. The census-taker would, in some cases, record her as white so that the children could be recorded as white.

I did not pursue the thesis topic; my orginal thesis committee would not endorse me, a Black Woman, writing about Black Women of African descent & Cherokee women. It was suggested my subjects had not done anything "historical."

The census was always more than counting citizens. The "takers" contributed to the American historical mythology of who was American enough to be counted as a citizen.

"Citizen" was 19th century-speak for white male. Accuracy was subjective and based on political agenda.
In the 21st century, "citizenship" is code for....?
