I JUST SPENT OUR #INDEPENDENCEDAY re-watching @wkamaubell's #UnitedShades of America's show that visited Canada. Why? Because I needed reminding of how angry I am that the people of the United States are being conned, lied to, and victimized every day. And we're all complicit.
All you have to do is watch this one 4 minute segment of @DocDanielle discussing the Canadian health care system to understand just how Republicans, @FoxNews and the American insurance industry have been bullshitting Americans for years.
Okay, the informed know about the healthcare lie. But what about low crime rates, or humane drug treatment, or that Canadians actually like & respect one another, all while WELCOMING immigrants that REPUBLICANS—ONLY REPUBLICANS—in the U.S. have demonized as marauding invaders?
Watch a former American discuss the relief he and his wife felt, after the Trump disease overcame America, that they were finally leaving a country that had been starting wars for most of their lives. (Something we who remain here have normalized.) cnn.com/videos/tv/2018…
Watch here, as Canadians talk about how informed they are of each other, and their politics, and their daily lives. Compare it to we Americans, only a few miles south, who are so detached, locked in our zones, often fearful, and increasingly bitter. cnn.com/videos/tv/2018…
How did it come to this? How did Canada, historically always a few years behind our trends, manage to build a decent —not perfect, but decent—society just north of us, where health, education, and just being respectful, reasonable and "nice" are now norms, not exceptions?
Are we so different? No. The difference is that they have no conservative propaganda machine—and especially no @FoxNews—to distort every salient fact, issue & narrative affecting their daily lives. We Americans, on the other hand, are being routinely manipulated… by bullshit.
Did @Foxnews start this assault on reality? No, that was started in the 1970s with a deliberate strategy to assault the media as "liberal," while actually using it to advance a ruinous conservative agenda. Read about the Powell Memo's role in that here ➤ shoqvalue.com/powellmemo
Conservatives tricked the greatest prototypical democracy in the history of the world into becoming a selfish shit-hole of self-interest, greed, and corporate malfeasance. A place where people may not hate each other in the moment, but they're ready to on a moment's notice.
While conservative agendas and media manipulation are what got us to this hideous place, they are not what keeps us here. That we can blame on the American Left, which has done little or nothing to methodically push back against this disease of "radical conservatism."
Year after year, the Left squanders billions on political & advocacy campaigns focused on whatever election or issue is topical that year, while the conservative machine keeps consistently teaching a worldview to successive generations using media, churches, and now, government.
The Right lavishly funds propaganda, while the Left relies mostly on a handful of corporate media outlets like @MSNBC to drizzle facts and reality into our national conversations. Now and then, a cause célèbre erupts, and money rushes in from our star-studded virtues industry.
Many of our problems could be remedied if far more money were being spent educating our citizens about why many issues even matter. For every $1 million spent on the politics of a current issue, another $3 million could be spent teaching how that issue even arose—and why.
If America is to cast-off its greedy conservative hegemons and find its way toward being a decent, citizen-centered democracy (like Canada), we must reeducate our populace. We must spend less money on advocacy & politics, and more on informing (teaching) a progressive worldview.
It was the Right consistently teaching their worldview that got us here. Aggressively teaching a progressive worldview can get us someplace else. We need to build organizations and leaders less concerned with the stylish causes that ebb and flow with each news cycle, and focus…
…more on the intellectual infrastructure we need to make our citizens understand why Canada is a nice place to live for decent people, while the United States is now a nice place to live for rich or lucky people, and a depressingly embittered place for almost everyone else.
Many of us loved this country our entire lives. But for nearly as many, that love is fermenting into a toxic loathing. But we can reverse that. We have always had the minds, the resources, and the compassion for each other. We just need to start using them. While we still can.
If someone lied to your children in school the way @FoxNews & this conservative conspiracy have been lying to Americans for 50+ years, you'd be seething with rage. That more of us are not pounding that conspiracy into sand is a failure of leadership; yours, mine, and ours.
Someone with big ties to Putin, and virtually zero courtroom experience is now the next in line to replace Rosenstein at Justice.
How much further, America? Why are we letting the GOP pretend this is normal?
IS EVERYONE IN AMERICA INSANE?
What is more preposterous? That this is happening, or that the @NYtimes, @washingtonpost@CNN keep putting up apologists and stooges to make everyone feel this is just Democracy at work.
ONLY A TOTAL FOOL COULD NOT SEE THE MULTIPLE LEVELS OF CORRUPTION AT PLAY HERE.
@nytimes@washingtonpost@CNN Your country is literally being ripped out from under you, and you have no choice but to just watch it happen, because someone has to act fast, but no one knows what that means.
And the enemy knows it. So keep watching. We are all but certain to lose it all.
The @potus, already suspected of conspiring with Russia, is about to meet with its president ALONE without a notetaker.
And your response to this will be what? More passionate floor speeches?
You lead the "opposition." Please start opposing.
@SenSchumer@NancyPelosi@POTUS Congressional Democrats should simply call in sick and stop the nation's business until Trump agrees to either cancel this meeting, or at least take a notetaker or witness along. Acquiescing to this absurdity, novel in the history of the world, is itself almost treasonous.
.@SenSchumer@NancyPelosi Respectfully, when are you going to hold a press conference or two and start getting some local news coverage trying to tell the America people just how bad all of this is for our nation?
AFTER THIS PSYCHOPATH FIRES ROBERT MUELLER?
Pretending this situation is politics as usual is putting this entire nation at risk. If you play it safe until November, there may not be a November.
Hyperbole? Perhaps. But it's hard to claim that based on the daily evidence piling up. You need to start showing real alarm.
You're in "safe mode," thinking you're on track to win in Nov. But that's NOT a sure thing. You need to get in front of cameras every day so every thinking American (and the press) feels the alarm. That will scare the GOP & business, while firing up voters. It's time to stand up.
I'm convinced that the solution to repairing America is my Creative Centers idea. By investing in maker space facilities & tech shops nationwide, the next generation could meet, work, bond and learn by making and sharing creative efforts of all kinds. We'll all be much happier.
It's not rocket science or magical thinking. Consider your own experience. The happiest and most humanistically kind and generous people I know have creative hobbies and passions.
But most people can't afford the space or tools of creativity. It's a fine goal for government
But we don't talk about ideas because we don't talk about much of anything except the politics of societal decay since Ronald Reagan set fire to the Shining City on the hill. We're being punked by greedy billionaires, religious zealots, slimy grifters, and a complicit media.
Once again, @CNN & @MSNBC give the White House all the time they ask for. Obama couldn't get arrested and get coverage like this. But the American left just nods. When do we confront the real problem in America? It *is* the media. (Just not Trump's version of it.)
Find me even 2 branded pundits who will say this. They know it's true, but they want the face-time on the networks so it never gets said.
But almost all liberals nod at this with little if any push-back. That makes all of us complicit. It's just hard to take liberals seriously
I've said year after year, the Right and the media are highly vulnerable to corporate pressure. The reason we haven't done it in a big way is NOT the Right's fault, but the selfish lack of will by publishers on The Left to push such efforts. #BoycottNRA is just "safer" for them.
