The cult leader is the first of 13 people to be hanged for the sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system. In the 1995 attack 12 people died and more than 1,000 fell ill.
Personal note: I lived in Tokyo at the time and had slept in after staying awake past 3 am (very unusual for me) and thus wasn't on the trains during the morning rush hour when the attack took place. I finally awoke due to the sound of many sirens of ambulances responding.
Update: Several convicted Aum cult members executed.
Aum either lacked the skill to produce sarin at a high potency or diluted it so the cult's handlers wouldn't die -- otherwise the death toll in the Tokyo subway system would likely have been in the hundreds or thousands. The chilling @OPCW report: opcw.org/news/article/t…
The cult's delusional self-styled guru -- who has just been hanged -- plotted to unleash chaos of such a magnitude that it would lead to a war with the US and, as a result, somehow he was become king of #Japan.
Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein suggested he secretly recorded @POTUS and discussed the 25th Amendment, reports @nytimes. nyti.ms/2xxNdwl
“The New York Times’s story is inaccurate and factually incorrect,” Rosenstein said in a statement. “Based on my personal dealings with the president, there is no basis to invoke the 25th Amendment.”
My colleague @masoodfarivar relays from source who was in room (with DAG when he made the comment): “I remember this meeting and remember the wire comment. The statement was sarcastic and was never discussed with any intention of recording a conversation with the president.”
"Those who interfere with our liberties will pay a price," @SecPompeo tells reporters and specifically mentions past election interference actions by #Russia.
"What Secretary Kerry has done is unseemly and unprecedented," says @SecPompeo about @JohnKerry and his efforts to save #Iran#JCPOA. "It is beyond inappropriate."
"Actively undermining U.S. policy as a former secretary of state is literally unheard of," adds @SecPompeo.
