What is a Red flag law?

Red flag laws empower law enforcement to petition a judge to temporarily block a person from having guns if they pose a danger to themselves or others. #momsdemand #gunsense
Red flag bills have been introduced or carried over in 25 states and D.C. this year. The ability to remove weapons temporarily from someone who is a threat to themselves or others is critical to our safety.
Red flag laws can help prevent suicide too by reducing access to guns. That is meaningful because suicide makes up nearly two-thirds of gun deaths in this country. And approximately 90% of people who attempt suicide with a gun will die.

Why do we need to know who has guns? 80% of people considering suicide give some sign of their intentions & 38 out of the 62 mass shooters in the last 20 years were reported as displaying signs of dangerous mental health problems prior to the killings. bit.ly/2FFkdVv
3D printing is one way to circumvent Red Flag Laws. This increased access to weapons places us all at risk. Most red flag laws do not prevent access to ammo, so printing a gun bypasses this safety net. Congress needs to address this loophole.

The more than 6,000 shootings/yr in FLA are a serious drain on
the economy. When the reduced quality of life attributable to pain and suffering ($9.1 billion) is considered, the overall estimate of the economic cost of gun violence rises to $14.1B/yr.

I am not anti-2A. But I am anti-making laws not based upon fact. Congress's recent decision to not fund gun research is ludicrous. cnn.it/2ugD1XC

We need data from empirical studies to drive change...not PACs & the gun lobby. That's why I'm #ManEnoughtobeaMom.

Ever wonder what it costs to detain immigrants?

In FY 2018, the federal government is set to spend $2.68 billion on DHS Custody Operations, or $7.34 million per day on immigrant detention.

dhs.gov/sites/default/…
But they are expecting an increase based upon Executive Order. "While CBP border apprehensions have declined, interior enforcement activity has risen steadily since the issuance of the EO."

dhs.gov/sites/default/…
Given the updated 48,879 detention bed quota for FY 2018, this amounts to an average daily cost of $152 per immigrant detainee.

$2,681,914 divided by 48,879 beds divided by 365 days = $152 daily/detainee
