An image of Jesus Christ, shot through by paramilitary snipers who shot at students and priests for 20+ hours, trapped inside the parish of Divine Mercy in #Managua. I listened to live streams from inside all night. They shot to kill. And kill, they did. #Nicaragua#nicaraguasos
After listening to live, close-range gunfire & calm narration by a livestreamer inside the church, i couldn’t sleep all night even when the feed went silent. I can’t focus on anything today but those kids still trapped inside the church. #NicaraguaSOS
When writing about Sen. John McCain’s cancer status today, I urge my fellow writers and news presenters to use plain, accurate language. No “ battle with cancer,” military metaphors, the mythical bravery and heroism. Try something different.
Cancer is cellular biology. It’s when our cells stop obeying the script, and reproduce like crazy. It’s science. Not emotional toxins, insufficient kale, bad karma, or “a brave battle.” It’s just glitchy cells you guys. Sometimes it kills the ones we love.
Senator McCain is a warfighter. He has fought and won plenty of battles. Let him rest now. He’s not losing anything.
When I was diagnosed with cancer I learned some things about fear. The fear you feel when cancer is active and in your body and diagnosed is a special kind of fear.
There’s a difference between fear of the abstract, and fear of something that is real, and threatening you, and threatening all you love. You’re not wrong to feel fear now.
