This week I spent 3 days, listening to over 22 hrs of testimony as a Commissioner on the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Commission. fdle.state.fl.us/MSDHS/Home
As Commissioners, we heard testimony on issues ranging from public safety radio technology to Florida’s mental health system. fdle.state.fl.us/MSDHS/Meetings…
What @browardschools calls threat assessment is not. There were countless opportunities to prevent the tragedy MSD. When elected to the Broward County School Board, I will ensure that we implement robust threat assessment and act decisively when threats are identified.
I will not stop until we understand why this tragedy occurred and how we can prevent the next one. tampabay.com/commission-lea…
Now, I need your help to ensure the voters of Broward County understand the importance of school. Please take just a few minutes and donate at voteryanpetty.com/contribute Your contribution will help change the status quo in our schools. Thank you. #FixIt

Wednesday (2/24/18) we gathered with 103 amazing people....most of the people were Alaina’s classmates and parents from kindergarten to 5th grade, along with friends of her brother, church friends and her kindergarten,
1st, 2nd and 5th grade teachers and a few staff members from the school.
While Wilder is over 3,000 miles away from Stoneman Douglas High School this shooting has affected our community. It was wonderful to hear the loving memories people had of Alaina.
I became a candidate for Broward County School Board to ensure my daughter and the 16 others on 2/14/18 would not die in vain. It has deeply impacted the community. These threats can never be allowed to fester again.
The @browardschools lawsuit against @SunSentinel should send a chill down our collective spines. We must have a free press to ensure a government that is accountable to the people. The district’s action is an outrage.
The Broward County School District, this school board and administration have a long established pattern of unaccountable behavior and a lack of transparency. That is nothing new.
Without question, the single most effective means of preventing school violence is threat assessment. On Thursday, the @SecretService released updated guidelines on effective threat assessment. secretservice.gov/data/press/rel…
A stunningly self-serving statement. Nothing we’ve learned thus far absolves @browardschools or its leadership. The failure to make school safety a priority was systemic & cultural. 1/6
In addition to the comments included here I said: Despite the optimism shared by some of the panelist, I don’t feel we have made any progress on this issue in the 19 years since Columbine. When Mr. Eid related the failure at Columbine, it was as if he talking about Parkland.
The truth is we know how to prevent the vast majority of these schools shootings. That we don’t take the appropriate steps to keep our kids and teachers safe is a tragedy beyond words.
Stoneman Douglas Shooter Was Assigned To Controversial Broward Discipline Program, Officials Now Say tinyurl.com/ycrbaotz
This is a stunning revelation & one that flies in the face of previous statements. That the District released it on a Sunday is all the more concerning.
However stunning, the focus should not be on any specific program. It's the totality of District failures that must be addressed.
