Rani Abbakkadevi, the only woman in history to confront, fight and repeatedly defeat the Portuguese. The Mangalorean Queen whom Portuguese feared. Her unflagging courage and indomitable spirit are at par with legendary Rani Laxmi Bai and Rani Chennamma of Kittur.
The year was 1555. Portuguese colonial power was at its peak in 1500’s. They destroyed Zamorins of Calicut, defeated Sultan of Bijapur, took away Daman from Sultan of Gujarat, established a colony in Mylapore, captured Bombay and made Goa their headquarters.
They even ruined the ancient Kapaleeswarar Temple to build a Church over it. Their next target, the super profitable port of Mangalore. Their only bad luck, just 14 km south of Mangalore was the small settlement of Ullal - ruled by a feisty 30 yr old woman-Abbakka Chowta.
Initially, they took her lightly and sent few boats/soldiers to capture and bring her back to Goa.Those boats never came back.Shocked and enraged, they sent huge fleet of ships under the command of Admiral Dom Álvaro da Silveira - The admiral returned, badly injured, empty handed.
Thereafter, another Portuguese fleet was sent - only a few injured from the crew managed to make it back. Then the Portuguese went on to capture the Mangalore port and the fort anyways, perhaps planning to tackle Abbakka Chowta from the convenient distance of the Mangalore fort.
After the successful capture of Mangalore, a huge army under João Peixoto, an experienced Portuguese General was sent to Ullal. The brief was simple: Subjugate Ullal and capture Abbakka Chowta.
The plan was foolproof- there was no way a 30 year old with a few men could withstand the might of an army of thousands with advanced weapons. The Portuguese reached Ullal and found it deserted. Abbakka was nowhere in sight. They roamed around, relaxed and thanked their stars.
Just when they were about to call it a victory, Chowta attacked with 200 of her chosen men. There was chaos all around and many portuguese lost their lives even without a fight. General João Peixoto was assassinated, 70 portuguese were captured and the rest just ran away.
So if you’re Abbakka Chowta, who’s just defeated a large army of aggressors, killed a general, captured fighters and defended her city, what will you do? Rest, enjoy the moment.Right? No!She rode with her men towards Mangalore that same night and laid a siege of the Mangalore fort
She not just broke inside the fort successfully, but assassinated Admiral Mascarenhas, Chief of Portuguese, forced remaining Portuguese to vacate fort. She didn’t just stop at this but went on to capture Portuguese settlement at Kundapura,100 kms north of Mangalore,to make a point
The Portuguese managed to get back at her by convincing her estranged husband to betray for money. She was arrested, put in prison where she revolted again and was killed while trying to escape. She was a brave queen who fought against Portuguese 300 yrs before 1st War in 1857.
What did we do to her as a mark of respect? We forgot her. Didn’t name our girls after her. Didn’t teach her stories to our kids. We did release a Postal Stamp in her name, named a boat after her, erected 2 statues, but only this much for someone who should be our national hero.
We might have got to read a chapter about her in our text books had she been a European or American. But we are still busy arguing if it was actually one of her daughters who fought the battles instead of her. Many talk abt her being the last Indian to have power of the agni-ban.
In all this cacophony, our generation has lost a great hero - a great source of inspiration.
Still wondering why you’ve not heard about her yet?

#S400Deal #S400_डिफेंस_डील
S-400 - Highlights and the deal:
This’s an air defence system being procured by Indian Air Force from Russia in a Govt to Govt deal, like Rafale.
Deal size $5.4 billion i.e ₹40,000 crores; the biggest ever defence deal by India.
The S-400 Surface-to-Air missile can destroy targets (whether static or enemy’s missile/fighter jets) even 400 Km away.
Its radars can track flying objects from a distance of 1000 Km; even if the size of a football; means entire Pakistan under its detection range.
It’s Russia’s most advanced defence system. (inducted in 2007) better than America’s ‘Patriot’ or anything else in the world. Its killing speed is 5 km/sec; and the best thing about it is it can easily be transported anywhere, including war field, and can be deployed in 5m flat.

It is an ancient and historical city that is 5000 years old. It is famous for spiritual as well as scientific reasons. It is described as the best city in Adi Brahma Puran and it is called mokshda and bhukti-mukti in Agni Puran and Garuda Puran.
There was a time when this city had been a capital of a big empire. It has a glorious history. As per religious books this city has never seen destruction, for God of destruction Mahakaal himself resides here. It has a Jyotirling out of the 12, 2 Shakti Peeths, the Sacred Kumbh.
As per Garuda Puran there are 7 cities that can provide salvation but importance of Ujjain is a little more. It's believed that it has foot prints of Lord Vishnu. Lord Rama himself performed his father’s last rites after his death at Ujjain. That place is called ‘Ram Ghat’.

There's no uproar about admitting all women at all times into Sabarimala. People have taken it with great equanimity and dry humour that has so characterised Hindu culture for millennia now. Already memes and jokes have started doing the rounds on WhatsApp.
People of my generation feel depressed, anguished. People with political axes to grind are expressing rage or glee depending on their affiliations. Older generation like those of my parents feel that the Lord knows what is best and acts through human agencies or through Nature.
The biggest circus, the electronic media, is stirring up such a cockfight. People who have no stake in the issue except political, act up with anchors playing ringmasters and get paid for their appearance.

Since late 80s issue of corruption has been discussed in every living room, in trains amongst co passengers, in schools, colleges, as a fav topic of debate, discussion; Is Corruption a bigger menace than terrorism or Is corruption making the country hollow!
We discussed every form of corruption endlessly, quoting examples, as if it was all pervading ; as to how money is being hoarded under beds, almirahs, how traders are avoiding sales tax, how inter state borders where excise people collect taxes are a big source of corruption.
How hardly 2% population is paying taxes and rest generating black money, how builders are minting money and flouting rules, diverting money from one project to another and fooling the customers, how some having black money are buying BENAMI properties.

Ever wondered why is it that we worship Lord Ganesh first! According to the Ganapati Upanishad, he appeared even before the creation of nature (prakriti) and consciousness (purusha). This is an important link as to why he's is worshiped before beginning any task.
According to the yogic perspective, anything we do has to fall under one of the two categories: material or spiritual. It's believed that Lord Ganesh rules the 'muladhara chakra' of our body. 'Muladhara' is the interface between the material and the spiritual worlds.
He controls both these worlds. He gives us material enjoyments in this world and liberates us from endless cycle of birth and death. According to yogic principles, our material life and spiritual journey starts from the 'Muladhara' chakra which is controlled by him.
