No, nuking Japan was neither necessary nor sufficient to end WWII in the pacific (unless you’re from the US in which case THIS IS AN ARTICLE OF FAITH).

Allow me to suggest some readings that I have compiled FOR JUST THIS OCCASION: A Thread!

1st up:

@WardHayesWilson's incisive foreign policy piece:
Wilson, Ward. “The Bomb Didn’t Beat Japan...Stalin Did.” 2013. foreignpolicy.com/2013/05/30/the…

I appreciate that Ward's work asks reader to consider atomic bombings in relation to a summer of city bombings/destruction.
3/n

2nd up: Kirby's Five Volume Official UK History of World War II. Pape (1993: 157) was kind enough to highlight one of the more relevant portions from Volume Five (1969) about the Japanese Surrender for us:

#PhDLife
4/n

3rd up in "the atomic bombings were unnecessary & insufficient to end Pacific WWII":

Pape, Robert A. “Why Japan Surrendered.” International Security 18, no. 2 (1993): 154–201.

Here, I've linked to a pdf for you because I'm a nice guy:

dropbox.com/s/lo3s8md6a1np…
5/n

5th up in readings about the end of WWII in the Pacific (no it wasn't the bombs):

Why, it's the United States Strategic Bombing Survey!

United States of America. United States Strategic Bombing Survey: Summary Report (Pacific War). July 1, 1946. anesi.com/ussbs01.htm#pa…
6/n

5th up in readings about end of WWII in Pacific (no it wasn't atomic bombs):

Asada, Sado. “The Shock of the Atomic Bomb and Japan’s Decision to Surrender: A Reconsideration.” Pacific Historical Review 67, no. 4 (1998): 477–512

dropbox.com/s/5zlko3qsyxi5…
7/n

6th up in readings about end of WWII in Pacific (no it wasn't nukes):

H-Diplo discussion of Hasegawa's (2006) "Racing the Enemy".

I have linked all the PDFs here b/c not well organized online:

dropbox.com/sh/6zfhgc9r8xn…
8/n

7th in readings about end of WWII in Pacific (no it wasn't nukes):

PRIMARY SOURCE DOCUMENTS!

Burr, William. The Atomic Bomb and the End of World War II: A Collection of Primary Sources. nsarchive2.gwu.edu/nukevault/ebb5….
9/n

While we are at it, let's talk about the claim that nuking Japan (by supposedly ending WWII) SAVED 500,000 TO MILLIONS OF ALLIED SOLDIERS LIVES (I have seen both claims and others in Visitor Book entries at nuclear heritage sites):

dropbox.com/s/bf4wvvppeqb0…
10/n

So, let me reiterate:

The US atomic attacks against the cities and civilians of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were neither necessary nor sufficient to end WWII in the Pacific Theatre.

It is, in the folkloric and anthropological sense, a myth that nuking Japan ended WWII.
11/11

If you want to know what role I personally think the atomic bombings played in the Japanese decision to surrender, well, in addition to providing a bibliography and links to readings, I discuss that on my Patreon for my beloved Patrons!

patreon.com/nuclearanthro
12/11

I cannot tell you how vexatious I find this discussion to have.

It's not about disagreement-these are things reasonable adults can disagree about based on available evidence.

It's the dogmatic, haven't done the readings #DeusExAtomica that just annoys the piss out of me.
13/11

Annoying person: ONLY REVISIONIST HISTORIANS QUESTION THE EFFICACY AND NECESSITY OF THE ATOMIC BOMBS TO END PACIFIC WWII!

People in 1945 and large swaths of the world that aren’t America: what the fuck is that person talking about?!?
For some real fun, let's look at Hirohito's surrender messages:

In one, to the public, Hirohito briefly mentions atomic bombings.

In order to armed forces to surrender, Hirohito only mentions USSR entry into war and ignores atomic bombings:

taiwandocuments.org/surrender07.htm
15/11

Let’s ask Harry Truman-on August 9th, 1945-what he thought the role of the USSR would be in compelling Japanese surrender:

(Letter is to Senator Richard Russell).

Ok, it’s time for an angry thread about this bullshit.

Let’s start with how this “administration” has in its public comments generally taken a “diplomacy is for faggots” stance and trace that back historically & cultrally, shall we?

1/n
2/n

since at least a decade pre-WWII (when my area of focus begins), State Department (& oft diplomacy in general) in US has oft been criticized in gendered terms:

effeminate & weak “cookie pushers in striped pants” contrasted to the violent & forceful “hard men of history”
3/n

look to 1950s & on Red Scare we see 2 fucked up things:

1) many more “perverts” (queer folk) were purged & denied employment than real or suspected Communists.

2) Lavender Scare started with, & could, State in sig part b/c of gendered critique of diplo as queer & unmanly

14,000-20,000+ nuclear weapon pits stored in those bunkers at Pantex.

That is A LOT (a shit ton) of presumably very well guarded fissile material.

I’m sure the contractor responsible is focused on patriotism & security, not profits.
Nuclear Weapon Dismantlement Workflow:

notice that after dismantlement the pit seems to just kind of hang around in storage forever until you end up with literally ten or twenty+ thousand of them hanging out.
New (as described in 2014) B83 work stands means not having to move weapon between work stands which is nice.

The more you handle and move them the more likely you are to have an oopsie.

All the fins are off in pic on left, two off in pic on right. Not sure if meaningful.

Approximately 800 US nuclear warheads ready to fly 24/7/365 and Trump has virtually unrestrained launch authority.

One man can end the world as you know it on an impulse.

HT @NarangVipin
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Nobody tell Trump about FURTHERANCE.

It is the sort of pharonic “everybody dies with me” sort of thing that would appeal to him. 😑

Also, FURTHERANCE is proof that as batshit as US nuke arrangements are now, they have been worse:

The B52-B at nuclear museum never went to SAC- it went straight into nuclear weapons test program, hence the insignia WHICH I FINALLY GOT PICS OF.

This B52 dropped Redwing Cherokee test device, 3.8MT first airdropped US dry thermonuclear weapon design.

Repost but new pic and I love it.

On this date 1946, US detonated at Bilini Atoll, Shot Baker in Operations Crossroads.

1st underwater (90ft) nuclear detonation; had flotilla of naval ships; & involved non-consensual “relocating” of Marshallese.

I will be tweeting about Baker throughout day.

Any discussion of Crossroads nuclear tests has to start with US nuclear colonialism.

The US coerced the Marshallese to leave their homes and then we nuked them 67 times with 108 megatons.

amp.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar…
3/n

Operation Crossroads (1946) was a Post WWII test/demo of Fat Man devices against naval targets (inter-service rivalry, what?).

Also allowed for further characterization of detonation effects & to posture for world.

Shot Able, 20kt, airdropped June 30, 1946

Oh, this is easy.

Bolton is full of shit and the “administration” has way overpromised.

DPRK isn’t going to denuclearize this year. Or next.

Unless it’s by detonating their nuclear weapons over targets when we invade. But that’s “running out of ammo” not denuclearization?
2/n

Let’s look at news from last couple of days & then estimate probability of DPRK denuclearizing in next year.

NBC: DPRK increasing FIZMAT production.

WashPost: DPRK trying to hide extent of nuke program from US.

Out today in the Wall Street Journal, North Korea is expanding and upgrading missile and RV production facilities:

(Great job @CNS_Updates, @ArmsControlWonk, & @DaveSchmerler)
