I just did a last minute swap to the reading for my Medieval Religion, Medicine, and Magic course. I decided to put in some blog posts by doctoral students in various stages of research, to show students how ideas are born, grow, & get refined.
Excited to see how it goes!
I’m hoping to show students that scholarly writing is the product of a long process, not something scholars are born knowing how to do. And I hope this makes them more comfortable about where THEY are in their process.

Wowowow I just discovered that Starship Titanic is on Steam. A lot of high school feels about that game.
I played this for a bit this morning before getting down to my research tasks for the day, and it's very much a weird flashback to a very particular part of my life in high school. Douglas Adams sure did like to start adventures by destroying the protagonist's house, didn't he?

While reading aloud from a history textbook in 5th grade, I accidentally said "Fart Duquesne" instead of "Fort Duquesne." Twice. When the teacher pointed it out to me I ran screaming to the bathroom in embarrassment
Coda: this nearly literally happened again in grad school, I will never forget my my advisor’s face the first time I pronounced eminent historian Walter Goffart’s name out loud in discussion
Here’s another that just occurred to me. At age 11 or so we went to play baseball with my dad and stepmom. When it was my turn to pitch I asked if I could pitch the wiffle ball. My dad had me pitch the softball...and hit s line drive right at my chin
