I'm listening through the archive of the radio chatter on the #seatac hijacking. Below are some of the clips.
I'm going through this as quickly as I can. Please bear with me.
Here he is realizing how quickly he is burning through fuel.
Here, the air traffic controller is trying to talk him into landing.
Here, he asks for help getting the cabin pressurized so he isn't "so lightheaded."
Looks like that didn't upload correctly. Here is the clip of him asking for help getting the cabin pressurized so he isn't "so lightheaded."
This clip appears to be just a fragment of a conversation that was stepped on by other traffic, but he is saying something about "chalking it up" to minimum wage.
Just to be clear: I don't think any of this is funny. I'm not trying to make light of the situation or to make fun of someone who is clearly in crisis. I think it's profoundly sad. I just hope these clips can help shed light on the man's state of mind.
My friend @sarahberms has advised me to share the suicide hotline on this thread, and she's right. Please, if you are feeling triggered by this, seek help. Here's a number you can call. 1-833-456-4566
Here, he asks for the coordinates of the mother orca that has been spotted in Puget Sound with her dead calf over the past few weeks.
Here he asks about the weather in the nearby Olympic mountains. Thanks to @petersterne for spotting this one.
Here someone calling himself captain Bill tries to talk him into landing. #seatac Thanks @jackhauen for finding this.
Here he discusses doing a barrel roll before he tries to land. Thank you @Jk44linebacker for finding this.
He talks about an engine feeling like it's cutting out. Credit to @jackhauen for finding this.
At this point I should note that *some of these are out of order*. This is a chaotic process with multiple people noted above sending me timecodes and me racing to get them transcribed and uploaded.
He's flying out over the Olympic mountains when his radio starts to become harder to hear. Thanks @BrianJAlford for this one.
Laments that he can't just chat with the people on the other end. @BrianJAlford
Here is a video, apparently, of the barrel roll. I can't confirm it's legit but it looks like it is.
That's it for me for tonight. I will try to compile these tomorrow. If anyone finds any other clips, you can fire them my way and I will tweet in the morning.
I hope this was helpful, and that I didn't contribute to anyone's suffering. Once again, if anyone is in need of someone to speak to, here's one number you can call: 1-800-565-3801
I don't have a soundcloud, and new followers, I'm sorry to disappoint but plane joyrides aren't my usual beat.
I work at @thenarwhalca covering the Arctic, and just this week joined @maisonneuvemag too. Please check out those great publications for non aviation related stuff.
This is the first time I hear his voice on the recordings, (pointed out to me by @bennnettwc). Hard to say exactly what he is responding to, but he claims to be a "ground service agent."
I've compiled all the clips of Rich speaking to ground control from last night, in order. It isn't a complete picture, because much of what was said has been lost. But hopefully it's a useful picture of the sequence of events. #seatac#seatacstolenplane
