I'm listening to @kathrynajoyce's THE CHILD CATCHERS. (If you liked my thread on the Trump administration deliberately creating orphans at the border, you'll LOVE this well-researched, intense book about white evangelical adoptions.
Two shocking things I learned: 1. After the earthquake, MOC were pushing to relax adoption regulations to make it easier to take children out of Haiti - many weren't even orphans. Some Democrats wanted to tie the bill to DACA. The bill's sponsors revolted. Same as it ever was.
2. The US moored ships off Haiti's coast, not just to provide disaster relief, but to interdict any Haitians trying to flee to the US for refuge. So Congress is making it easier to take Haitian children while simultaneously deflecting their parents' efforts to reach safety.
Women blame themselves, and other women, for being sexually assaulted because the only thing worse than being a victim is realizing it could happen (again) and we’re utterly powerless to stop it. Telling ourselves “I do everything right, so this can’t happen to me” is a talisman.
No matter what happens with Kavanaugh, Trump’s already gotten what he wanted out of the deal. His followers are already mindlessly insisting “rape doesn’t matter”, especially if it happened over 30 years ago. Trump has defanged the kompromat from his 1992 Moscow visit.
If you always think of Trump as a Russophilic mobster, you can understand what he’s doing. Kav has been groomed for decades by the right wing establishment. Trump sees the old boys club as a competing gang & dangerous to his operation. He has no reason to put their guy on SCOTUS.
Kav might favor an imperial presidency, but these plans were drawn up in Ivy League secret societies, Kalorama drawing rooms and remote hunting lodges. They want to put one of their own on the throne. Trump’s a fool if he thinks they’ll waste their one best first chance on him.
We’re hearing a lot of “Trump didn’t obstruct’, “Trump didn’t say anything that showed criminal activity” and “I didn’t do anything wrong”. Those are all opinions. They may go to intent, but the Special Counsel decides if something rises to the level of criminal prosecution.
Targets don’t decide if their behavior is criminal. I doubt Mueller’s team is as interested in Trump’s, Giuliani’s and McGahn’s opinions about the legality of conduct and cares more about answers to specific questions about actions and statements.
On alternative Earth in alternative America where no one is above the law, targets/defendants/witnesses don’t decide if their testimony is germane to an investigation. They don’t “negotiate” what they’ll agree to talk about.
Look, white people. If you don’t want to be part of a multicultural society that opens its doors to refugees and asylum seekers, your ancestors never should have left the old country. The price of admission is easing the way for the next generation of immigrants.
You don’t go to dinner at a friend’s house, insist on throwing out the hostess’ dinner then take over the kitchen and make the food you’re used to eating. America is a smorgasbord. Just because you prefer TV dinners doesn’t mean the rest of us want to eat that.
Your people knew the rules when they decided to immigrate. What gives you the right to follow the American beacon of hope then slam the door in the faces of people just like your ancestors? America is a country of progress, not isolationism.
This must be what SHS referred to in briefing. Trump trolls changed “wring her neck” to “choke”. Love @NicolleDWallace but unfortunately her frustration with WH advisors disrespecting McCain spilled over. She apologized and no liberal militia stalked SHS.
SHS got this one wrong, too. Conservative pundit Jennifer Rubin said on MSNBC, not CNN. @PressSec even lies when reciting her personal litany of complaints about the press. conservative101.com/conservative-c…
I’m confused about ICE not being welcome in churches and “personal information is shared on the internet”. Is she mad media reported on this or accusing legitimate journalists of doing this?
