This is @jpalmerOKC and I’ll be live tweeting in a few minutes from the @okcchamber ‘s State of the Schools. Speakers are @OKCPS Superintendent Sean McDaniel and OU President Jim Gallogly. Stay tuned! #oklaed
McDaniel: yes, I’m enjoying this job. I’m enjoying this job because of the people around me.
McDaniel: My intention is to stay. I’ve pitched out the number 10, then look and reevaluate the district.
McDaniel says he’s learning to speak Spanish in an after school course to better connect with the community #oklaed
Describing pockets of greatness all over the @OKCPS district. “There should be an expectation of greatness everywhere. The narrative has to change.”
McDaniel: (talking about existing strategic plan for the district the Great Commitment) I’m not going to be the guy who comes in and wipes the slate clean. Accelerate the focus and measurement aspect. We recognize the need to do a better job with academic results.
McDaniel: (district getting ready to make hard decisions with building assessment) “Our kids are used to hard things. The least we can do as adults is make the hard decisions so they can do better.”
Q: define success. McDaniel: Success looks different for different kids and different schools and different families...certainly we want to address attendance, test scores and equity. #oklaed
Taking a short break. Gallogly up next.
Gallogly: OU has a fabulous undergraduate program. You know the stats on National Merit Scholars, Honors College. We’ve spent a lot of effort building that. Next: double the research. Grow graduate program.
Gallogly: we need to invest in our faculty, our human capital.
Gallogly: I’ve been working hard to find inefficiencies. They’re everywhere. We still do paper time sheets. That’s going to change.
Gallogly, on remediation among college students: “we’re not doing it right in either place right now” (common ed or higher ed)
That’s a wrap folks. Thanks for following along.
