It was all smiles and accolades at the launch, but everyone seems to be glossing over the centre’s funding source and the huge ethical problems that raises.
The centre is being funded by The Foundation for a Smoke-Free World. Here’s their President, Derek Yach, talking about the new research centre. vimeo.com/285901659
The Foundation for a Smoke-Free World (sounds great, right?) is actually backed by Philip Morris International.
This is the #tobacco industry up to its old tricks. It’s an industry with a long track record of exploiting marginalised populations, including #Indigenous peoples, in order to promote their deadly product.
It is unconscionable. Universities must refuse to be associated in any way with this research centre.
Anyone else considering associating with this 'Centre of Research Excellence on Indigenous Sovereignty & Smoking' needs to be fully aware of the funding arrangements and the serious implications for the work of the centre and for #Indigenoushealth.
