I just published “Will Police Reform Work Sustainably This Time? — @segalinkmedium.com/p/will-police-…
For the sakes of headline junkies let me dissect the thoughts in that piece.

The journey thus far has been daunting to say the least & the most common questions have been; “Can the pronouncements be trusted?” “Will the Reforms be real and felt on ground?”
“We have heard many terms before and nothing has changed since the sundry political pronouncements” someone said to me, while walking out of the Force HQ in Abuja. A channels TV reporter specifically asked what is being done differently now for citizens to be optimistic?
A brother of mine also asserts that Police Reform can not work under the current leadership of the @PoliceNG Most of these concerns are real but here is our position; first of all the Police didn’t get derelict overnight. It took years of consistent neglect.
So unless we are seeking a switch of a reform (which is unrealistic) we don’t expect it to fully be accomplished under the current leadership of the police. IGP Idris is due for retirement in a few months and his leave begins in October. Besides he’s started delegating.
We have interacted with the hierarchy of Police and can say that they are ready to welcome improvement and what is different. They have shown this in action and commitment in the past few weeks and the reason is clear. Doing otherwise is to be on the wrong side of history.
However, as a pragmatist, let me be forthright with all and sundry. There are no guarantees. I don’t know if things will work this time and even if we succeed, no one can, at this point guarantee sustainability. Why? 🤔
This is simply because there are too many variables here, chiefly the disconnect of the public and the orientation of each and everyone of us about self preservation and instant gratification. You may also add the cynicism and prejudicial disposition of the public.
We must not think this is a task isolated to the police or politicians in Government. We must all be involved in the process. We must take ownership in the police structure and society.
We must realize we are the chief security officers of our society with a duty to report crimes (both those perpetrated by Police and by known/unknown criminals in our midst). While the authorities work at accountability and transparency enough to earn our Trust.
We must be sensitively conscious in our rush for the pursuit of happiness with great panic and anxiety, which are needless in our becoming. Our society is the environment that creates a platform for us to either thrive or fail.
When we fix society, we fix ourselves and position ourselves for accelerated improvement for better and a new experience. When a plant is deficient or deformed, fixing its environment changes its fate. It will take a process which must be monitored. It is not a switch.
When Nigerians succeed everywhere but their own country, it tells a lot about the derelict and toxic condition of our environment that we have chosen to normalize. Our institutions are weak because we allowed it and what we allow continues.
It is time to realize that ordinary people change the world all the time and it is time a critical mass of enlightened Nigerians come together to fix our institutions one after the other beginning with the Criminal Justice System leading with the Police institution.
If we can perceive it we can achieve it. We sure can collectively build a society where our youth need not be depressed or stressed. A community where we trade hugs and not drugs. A haven void of battery cum need for escape and rape. A society where anxiety has no meaning.
A #NewNigeria where police is truly our friend and bail is indeed free. Over 70million youth population is enough indication that we are blessed. Great nations are adjudged wealthy by their productivity (fruitfulness) and the strength of their workforce.
What precisely is the value of our dormant and impoverished youth to the economy? The ones the system promised would be gainfully employed right after NYSC. What is the relevance of the curriculum to what is actually a dominant requirement in the job market?
Why the gaping gulf between the town and the gown? How can we justify our sense of entitlement with the expectation of 21st century policing when policemen have nothing to work with? It is not just about welfare, where is the sense of belonging and hope for the future?
How can any officer boast of self actualization on a job that issues directives without responsibility? How then can the leaders morally demand accountability? How do you police a population more enlightened than you? How can anyone respect you when they can see your flaws?
With great power comes great responsibility. The more power you possess the more the restraint expected of you. What you see on foreign media showing how blacks act when accosted by the Police is not a global expectation or standard, but an indictment on their Police.
No police officer on our soil should expect citizens to fear them rather strive to earn their respect. Our institutions and leaders are not Ugly. They are merely a reflection of our society, where teens are high and leaders lie.
How then do we find comfort in being adjusted to a profoundly sick society? But before we point fingers at society, let us remember that we are society.
A healthy man in a sick society is a sick man for the more a man’s life is shaped by the collective norm, the greater is his individual immorality.
Everybody is uniquely blessed, this is our Nigerianism. To unleash this, we must fix our society beginning with our institutions. For where in our time and society would you find a person who knew how to express what your uniqueness alone can express?
To put this less poetically, the question posed is to us all, will we make the Police Reform work this time? Will we make Nigeria work for all? Will we be disciplined and committed enough to go through the learning curve and accommodate true change and due process?
The success and failure of this journey is in our hands. Question everything, get involved, contribute your quota and be a part of history.
Each time we break the law, abuse the rights of fellow citizens, insult officers of the law or give bribe, we are on the wrong side of history and have positioned ourselves to steal from the Cause, thus setting us all back.
The process must be dutifully and surgically executed for the sake of our children and loved ones. It is their future we are investing in. We are creating a new culture and it is a journey that has no arrival.
We will keep improving, evaluating, updating the public, obtaining feedback and perfecting the system until our joy as a people knows no bound in satisfaction with the services of our heroes, who kept watch while we sleep.
Someone asked if we have joined the Police now. The answer to this is simple, there are no sides. Police is part of society in a democracy. There’s no We against Them. We however must continue to stand firm to help pull our sinking Police institution out of the precipice.
They will continue to be held accountable and compelled to be transparent. We are also ready to put our money where our mouth is to raise funds, galvanize support skills, help source training and facilitate improvement across spectrum. Let’s do this in Faith.
Thanks for your audience and attention. Please call us out as well and question everything. Do have a great sunday. Keep praying for us all. A #NewNigeria is possible. It is real. We are already walking in it and soon it will fully materialize with your support.

Thanks @DemolaRewaju for your atticism & clarity on political cum historical facts. Let me clear the air on my position. First, I didn’t strategize for the PDP & have never met the leadership of the party in any regard. I strategized for the future of Nigeria with the President.
It has neither ethno religious coloration nor political partisanship. All I told him before the election came to pass and all we deliberated on happened just as forecasted. He became a winner despite the loss of the election because he meant well for all & value good counsel.
After election I did gave free advices on how the PDP could build back the party in order to avoid having a unitary party system (an advocacy that brought about the creation of the APC Merger- of which I was involved in its strategic birth, when PDP became complacent).

As wonderful as this idea is, it won’t win the election. The battle ground geopolitical zone is not SS or SE but the SW. If @Atiku can pick a formidable influential youth from the SW (Male/Female) it will make the difference. NOI can always serve in the Admin with impact.
Also, he may need to allow the record reflect that he is only running this time to deliver Nigeria from the current darkness that envelopes her by deploying his resources and political structures to that effect as a legacy and would not seek a second term.
This way, the platitude of a promise by the leadership of the APC, void of integrity, on 2023 Presidential zoning to the SW will be neutralized and reinvigorated by a promise they can take to the bank and act upon should there be a breach.

When it comes to Money, Virtue is often defenestrated (virtually thrown out the window). The forth coming election would either be Won, Bought or Stolen. With the position of @inecnigeria in collusion with those bent on rigging the election with fictitious figures, this is clear.
90% (if not all) of the elections conducted under this “Regime” has been fraught with electoral fraud thus when opposition wins election it is declared inconclusive and rigged via an unconscionable re-run designed to disenfranchise the people. So a Win is out of the question.
Better phrased, a Win may not be enough under this Regime if you are not in Tahir favored books. The Wife of the president even raised an alarm over injustices within the President’s party let alone the wrath reserved for the opposition just to retain power by force.

Vengeance is a lazy form of Grief. ⛱
The simplest of tweets can be far more complicated than threads. This one right here can be a book yet barely scratch the surface of the expression. I’m simply saying, don’t confuse Vengeance with Justice the same way Anger must not be confused with Strength. ⛱
There are many people out there broken into pieces and seeking those that are whole to break just to get even with life. We must understand that sadness sometimes carry a whole lot of weight that often times attempt to stop you from breathing.

Your attitude and character is everything. If you can’t contain your hate and prejudices simply because of a tweet you read, then nothing else matters. You will always find anything you seek. If you want to be offended even a harmless emoji will set you ablaze. Watch it.
I really don’t know the motive of deploying hate towards people who see things differently. Changing a mind is different from having an argument. Persuasion takes patience, skill and insight, not force. You can’t insult me into supporting your sentiments. 🤔
You must never forget the next line of action when people undermine you. When they think they can walk over your Heart with their dirty feet, when they take your softness for weakness.

I’m sore disappointed in the development coming from @OfficialAPCNg primaries in Bauchi. Where @alouibrahim92 was rigged out despite the people’s support in huge numbers. Thugs were deployed and voters were harassed. Result sheets falsified in collusion with party officials. 😞
This is how APC is losing their great potentials. All those I knew from back in the days of great sacrifices for fo CPC/APC have been frustrated out of the party. The few that managed to keep the faith are now being disincentivized. Where’s their automatic ticket despite loyalty?
Is this what @MBuhari will be remembered for? All your loyal men/women ruined because of self centered party politics that ostracizes and impoverishes the people. Is the APC reserved for families and friends now? 2019 will be very interesting. This is really pathetic. @abellodam
