Taken the facts of the case into consideration, there was a report of a boisterous Gay Party in Egbeda Area. As you know Police are meant to uphold and enforce the law. The party was raided and the suspects undergoing processing under the directive of the CP.

Our Lawyer from @citizen_gavel is on ground. We have spoken with the Area Commander and contacted the CP. The complainant in the tweet didn’t know he attended a GayParadeEvent until moments ago. He is straight with a Girl friend to back his claim & void of suspicious mannerism.

The Law of the land is what it is & the Police have to enforce it. We won’t let anyone’s rights to be abused and at the same time won’t obstruct officers from doing what is necessary. Citizens must be wary that Nigeria is not yet U.S. where this kind of culture is allowed.

We have reports that this community are now harassing police officers, soliciting for flings and resorting to blackmail when reprimanded. In as much as we all know the law, it’ll be safe for us to abide by it. Whatever it is U believe is right for U must not be forced on others.

In as much as I believe we all have rights as humans and citizens, our preferences on other matters that conflict with the current law of the land should be treated cautiously. If you need to push for a legislation do so but don’t approach this sentimentally with law enforcers.

Those who will choose to begin an unconscionable tirade based on this clarification that is void of prejudice will be blocked instantly. We come to the aid of citizens regardless of what they ate for breakfast or what or who they choose to worship. Avoid the drama here.

There is no such thing as permitted by law as LGBT community in Nigeria. If it exists illegally, you people have a lot of work to do in getting the appropriate legislation to make it legit. Until then please be on the right side of history and obey the laws of the land.

We will be hypocrites if we fight against Police acting outside the law of the land and encourage other sects & groups operate outside the law and culture of Nigeria thus making policing difficult. Let us be sensitive and lawful. No one will violate ur civic rights under the law.

As per the Tweep, he will have to be processed by the officers, who will ensure they get the necessary representation. He was invited, he consented and was at the scene before the raid. His claim of not knowing what the gathering is about is subject to inquiry. The law is clear.

The police responded to a disturbing Call and acted on it. The material fact of what that is can be gleaned from their report. I won’t open that up here beyond the fact that people were picked at a party deemed to be queer based on the report. Period.

This was what influenced my admonition that we all must Thread carefully especially with issues of law. Police sometimes harass the innocent, so you can imagine the fate of one seen to have contravened the law. Which brings me to the position of the LGBT and our law.

There are 3 major laws to consider; the first is the SSMPA (Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act 2014 ) lawnigeria.com/LawsoftheFeder… which forbids marriage between folks of same sex, display of amorous affection & registration of Gay clubs & societies.

So it is correct to say from the legal purview that there is such thing as an LGBT society duly recognized and registered by law in Nigeria. If it exists it is illegal. I maintain they can push for this legislation instead of forcing it emotionally.

It is even criminal to witness same sex marriage or officiate this marriages between people of same sex. Some may argue that the law was not explicit on criminalizing being gay, lesbian etc that is left for the court’s interpretation.

Those who wants to prove that Gay Parties is Legal while Gay Clubs are not when such community and society have been criminalized from being instituted are for ever welcome to argue that case in any court to set the precedence. The event above wasn’t just about the party.

However, it is not in the place of any police officer to arbitrarily deem anyone gay by dressing, nuances or what have you. Citizens must not be harassed based on unfounded allegations except in cases where an actual crime has been committed with evidence to show.

The cases I glossed over are far deeper than they seem. Anyone who needs further clarification can DM. Those involved in illicit activities of hunting men in uniforms have admitted to the charge with evidences kept in record. Some even vowed to commit suicide if revealed.

We also have the Criminal Code and Penal Code which criminalize “Unnatural Sex” read more for interpretation. Some things are commonsensical. Laws reflect society and factor in culture in some cases. This is Nigeria. Not San Francisco.
