1) I tried to sit out on August Postcard Poetry Month. Needed to give that part of my brain a month of rest. Then Aretha died and I wrote a poem for her in spite of my plans. Today I am reviewing haiku from previous Augusts. Walk with me.

2) First line has five beats.
But isn’t that Japanese?
Heck! Translation fails.

3) Poesia-me.
Romance me. Make me a rhyme.
Let me be the poem.

4) Things still remain wrapped
up – that want to be unwound –
thoughts and worlds unformed.

5) Can I stop it now?
Is there ink still in my pen?
A pulse in my veins?

6) I was going to sit this year out –
Had to drop last year and took some flak
About it – unnecessarily – to do my own thing

7) But #clmooc got the juices flowing
And reacquainted me with my own voice –
So I don’t care today who unfollows me

On Twitter. I learned, over the years,
how to exist outside my various identities –
Writing poems in August is one of those –

8) Rest on the 7th day/month/year.
Tobacco depletes the soil -
Cotton is worse still.

9) And yes, haiku fits
better on the postcard,
a sonnet might crowd the space.

10) Words don’t always fall
Streaming like pearls from your lips.
Sound – the soul’s delight.

The flat television screen –
Encircling my thoughts.

Until August starts – a stamp
And a poem will come.

Your need or mine but we write
