While everyone is feeling all their good feelings about John McCain, let’s take a second to unpack why: he was a sane, decent man that reached across the aisle, and he didn’t make deplorable personal attacks.

If you’re a Trump supporter, and you’re a fan of McCain - or other
veterans like McCain - it might be well worth remembering that Trump has spent the last few years ridiculing him for having been captured and tortured as a prisoner of war.

Even in recent weeks, when a bill that had McCain’s name on it came before Trump to sign, he spent an
entire day actively not mentioning him, much to the ire of other Republican leaders.

I think people are mourning McCain, because he reminds us that there was a time not that long ago when we could still put politics aside and just be people with one another.
Yes, there is great irony in the notion that McCain was integral in raising up the radical right wing by legitimizing Sarah Palin and others cut from the same cloth, and that doing so very likely led to Trump, but I’m kind of hoping that we can realize the lesson - if there is
one - is that left or right we are all people.

And if you value the idea that politics should never be about personal attacks or lining your pockets, that we as Americans should value things like objective truth and honesty, and that whether you agree with war or not,
those that fight for our freedoms deserve dignity and respect - especially those that have been captured and tortured so that we could have those freedoms - then consider looking at who you’re currently empowering in our government.

Look at the causes your memes and clickbait
links are promoting. Ask yourself if they align with who you tell yourself you are as a person.

And, if they aren’t, then consider reminding the American public that the Republican Party is about something other than bigoted ideologies and corrupt politicians who value
their own power and party over the people they claim to represent.

If you vote Republican this November, ask yourself if the candidate you’re voting for is a Trump or a McCain and decide what kind of values you’re willing to continue defending.
