I live in NY-38 and intend to vote for @Julie4NYSenate as part of a larger commitment to @NoIDCNY / #NoIDCNY. A quick thread with some observations regarding the NYS IDC:
Disclaimer: I am just a Rockland voter, not affiliated with any candidate or organization unless you count being registered with the Democratic party. I’m pretty lefty but I voted for a local Republican once.
I saw tweets heating up last night from some from IDC incumbents and their staffers regarding exactly who is responsible for the Republican/IDC majority (basically asserting that because Simcha Felder caucused with the Rs it was natural for the IDC to do the same).
What I’m seeing from these staffers equates the IDC with some policy-wonk four-dimensional chess—‘yeah, we caucused with the Rs, but FELDER and THERE WAS GONNA BE A RECOUNT’. I’m not here for that talk. They are trying to make it sound complicated when actually it is simple.
I am a Democrat. I agree with the majority of the Democratic party platform. When I vote for someone with a D next to his name (and I did!) I expect him to stand more or less with the party platform. If he doesn’t, he isn’t representing me and I would do well to look elsewhere.
(I am also a mom, so please hear this in my loudest, clearest mom voice: “I’m not Felder’s constituent, I’m yours, and I don’t care what he does, I care what you do. If Felder and Klein and Hamilton jumped off a bridge, would you?”)
So, folks can skip me when they come talking about when the recount was certified vs when the IDC caucused and what might have elapsed in the seven minutes between those events. That is intended to obsfucate the simpler truth:
I get to vote for a candidate that represents me, and you get to vote for a candidate that represents you, and primaries really, really matter when someone with a D next to his name doesn’t vote accordingly.
If your Democrat doesn’t represent your Democratic views, go get yourself a better Democrat. This primary (September 13!!) is about our opportunity to dismantle the IDC and have a Democratic majority that actually votes like one.
“But, but, but...the IDC disbanded!” So did LCD Soundsystem but they keep going back on tour.
(Shoutout to #PostcardstoVoters for their support of #TrueBlueDemocrat candidates and for leading me to really read and think about these issues, and to Susan from Oregon who wrote the postcard I received!)
