Statement delivered by His Excellency President @MBuhari at the General Debate of #UNGA 73 | 25 September 2018 #Thread#PMBAtUNGA18
On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, I congratulate you, Madam President, on your well-deserved election as President of the 73rd General Assembly.
The Presidency rejects allegations of opposition politicians, as well as some newspaper editorial opinions creating the impression that President Buhari is against the use of card readers in the upcoming elections,... (Cont’d)
... hence his decision to decline assent, for the 3rd time, to the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2018.
We wish to state in clear & unambiguous terms that the issue of e-voting and use of card readers was NEVER an issue for the President’s decision to decline assent to the Bill.
It is equally important that this issue was not raised either by the Executive or the Legislature in the recent reviews. Moreover, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) adoption of e-voting reforms is enshrined in the 2015 Amendment Act to the Electoral Reform Act.
President @MBuhari arrived Beijing Saturday to attend the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (#FOCAC2018) holding September 3 - 4, 2018. #PMBAtFOCAC7#PMBinChina2018
During the 6-day official visit, PMB is expected to join President Xi Jinping to witness the signing of an agreement on the $328m National Information & Communication Technology Infrastructure Backbone Phase 11 (NICTIB 11),between Galaxy Backbone Limited & Huawei Technologies Ltd
The Funding for the NICTIB 11 project will be provided by the Chinese EXIM Bank. The project is consistent with the Buhari Administration’s commitment to incorporating the development of ICT into national strategic planning under the National Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.
Our attention has been drawn to incorrect and misleading reporting regarding the status of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2018.
This is the true position:
The Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2018 was sent by @nassnigeria to the President on June 27, 2018, for assent. @NGRSenate@HouseNGR
Following extensive consideration of the Bill, the Presidency engaged with the National Assembly to raise concerns regarding technical & legal errors/issues found in the submitted version. Following this, the National Assembly met, on July 24, 2018, to revise the Bill.
1/ Following persistent complaints & reports on the activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) that border on allegations of human rights violations, AgP @ProfOsinbajo has directed the Inspector General of Police to, with immediate effect...
2/ overhaul the Mgt & activities of SARS and ensure that any Unit that will emerge from the process, will be intelligence-driven & restricted to the prevention & detection of armed robbery & kidnapping, & apprehension of offenders linked to the stated offences, and nothing more.
3/ The Acting President has also directed the IGP to ensure that all operatives in the emerging Unit conduct their operations in strict adherence to the rule of law and with due regard to International Human Rights Law and the constitutionally guaranteed rights of suspects.
1/ The Presidency has taken note of the orchestrated campaign against President @MBuhari each time a VIP is invited by law enforcement agencies, in the discharge of their legitimate duties and functions.
2/ The law of the land is intended for all, not for the poor or those at the lowest rungs of the social ladder.
3/ It is strange and bizarre that while ordinary citizens can be called up to answer questions or be interrogated, VIPs cannot be questioned without the annoying insinuations of partisanship, persecution or outright politicization.
