Court ruled $19 billion liability, reduced to $12b. But Chevron no longer operates in #Ecuador, who therefore tried (unsuccessfully) to pursue the oil giant in foreign courts. Chevron has now counter sued: forbes.com/sites/michaelk…

Chevron not only wants the liability ruling dismissed but also "full indemnification and damages against #Ecuador, including all costs and attorneys’ fees, with pre-award and post-award interest." A dangerous precedent for oil giants globally.

In 2011 Chevron sued 47 impoverished villagers in #Ecuador plus their New York lawyer for $60 billion. Chevron has spent an estimated $2 billion on 60 law firms and 2,000 lawyers on the decades old case. Meanwhile villagers are dying from drinking poisoned water all their lives.

Of course the #Ecuador govt would say this case has nothing to do with the recent dismissal of 9 Supreme Court judges, who were blamed for "conflicts of interest and ignoring a huge backlog of work". But we know President @Lenin Moreno wants "improved relations with the world".

With yesterday's announcement of over $1 billion in loans to #Ecuador, it will be interesting to see what happens next with the #Chevron case. Sure looks like quid pro quo to me. #FreeASSANGE

The Hague court ruled that #Ecuador violated an article of the "bilateral treaty on protection of investments with the USA", but still has not announced the amount of $$$ indemnity (could take months). eltelegrafo.com.ec/noticias/polit…

That treaty was signed in 1997 (pre-Correa) and is now being applied retrospectively. Moreno has betrayed 25 years of hard struggle. #Chevron destroyed over 450,000 hectares of Amazon jungle. Here's a good video in English of this long, sad case: telesurtv.net/english/pages/…
