Cultural Platforms and Digital Participation - digital allows you to develop and disseminate narratives for your museums in a new form, and the ability to connect with distant audiences across the world. #VCday2018@Indigo_H_J#MuseSocial
But there are barriers to digital participation - remote communities, aged and Indigenous folk are the least represented in the digital sphere #VCday2018@Indigo_H_J#MuseSocial
'Publics' r social groups that form around knowledge & the narratives tht result from tht knowledge (Hartley and Potts). Your non digital publics might be yr local community, your digital publics are those who visit your website/your social media #VCday2018@Indigo_H_J#MuseSocial
Your digital publics are Browsers and Explorers. Browsers are students, researchers or history enthusiasts looking for specific things. Explorers are out there to see what they can find. #VCday2018@Indigo_H_J#MuseSocial
"Social media is about finding your people." - Amelia from @_mavic . So where are your people? Are they on FB, twitter, instagram? Find where they are and go there #VCday2018@Indigo_H_J#MuseSocial
- Twitter is museum and cultural sector professionals talking to each other... Some good hashtags to follow are #MuseTech#MuseWeb#MuseSocial
- Facebook is the home of community collection orgs. So this is where you can be finding your ppl #VCday2018@Indigo_H_J#MuseSocial
Wrap up of Indigo's talk about publics and social media - Social Media is an opportunity to find your people and share your collections. So get on it! #VCday2018@Indigo_H_J#MuseSocial
Qn from the audience - for those small museums that sell their photos as a form of income, how do they share on SM without affecting income? Indigo: watermarks can help but SM can also grow your community which can poss bring in more income #VCday2018@Indigo_H_J#MuseSocial
Keep an eye on other pages on facebook, you can share items from other pages which helps tie your collection into the wider world. Tag other museums/historic societies to join in the fun and spread the word further #VCday2018@Indigo_H_J#MuseSocial
A comment from the audience, their historical society (I missed which one it was) share photos but only very low res photos, they mention each time that you sell high res copies if people are interested. #VCday2018@Indigo_H_J#MuseSocial
#GoldMuseumTour we start outside with a statue of #SirHenryBolte who was a Lib premier of Vic for a record 17 yrs. He supported development of @sovereignhill & pushed to set up an acquisition fund for historic items. Love how his hand is shiny from people grasping it!
#GoldMuseumTour we start with a small display of the Indigenous language group who were in this region, the Watha Wurrung. There's some beautiful items on display but no label which identifies and describes and/or ages them.
