Following the 'Article 7 vote' in the European Parliament, some facts on how the EU has been "punishing" Hungary since 2004...
-Hungary is a net beneficiary since accession. It receives more money than it pays. +11.000 billion Hungarian forint since 2004.

-With 6.3 % of its wealth (gross national income) generated by EU investment, Hungary is one of the countries that benefits most from EU funding.
-Over 95 % of public investments in Hungary co-financed by EU. EU invests heavily in HU regions- projects such as modernisation of water systems in cities.

-With EU's help important monuments repaired all over the country: the Eger Minaret, the Sümeg, Kőszeg, Szigetvár Castle...
-EU support major infrastructural developments such as expansion of Hungarian motorway network or Budapest Metro. In addition to this, the EU supported purchase of hospital diagnostic tools, restore damaged roadways, and others, creating thousands of jobs.
HU gov says "Organizations supported from abroad operate in Hungary with the aim to interfere in Hungarian internal affairs in a non-transparent manner”

Truth is conditions under which NGOs carry out their activities are in principle a matter of national law. National.
-EU is massively supporting job creation in Hungary, having provided more than €21 billion to Hungary to support growth and jobs through regional policy funding alone in the period 2007-13.

- €26 million has been dedicated to operations in Hungary under #InvestEU
-€25 billion in EU investment during the period 2014-2020, the equivalent of €368 per Hungarian per year.

-Hungarian gov is responsible for its own national economic policy. EU law only provides for coordination of economic policies between the Member States.
-HU Gov:"Brussels attacking our country because of tax cuts”. But setting of corporate & income tax rates is a sovereign right. Issues related to tax can only be agreed by EU if all countries – including HU – agree. HU gov decided to set rate at 27%. Highest in the entire EU.
HU gov says: “Brussels wants to force Hungary to let in illegal immigrants”. The EC proposed to relocate up to 54,000 asylum applicants from Hungary to other countries. HU gov said no. HU therefore asked to accept a very limited n° asylum seekers-1,294– not “illegal immigrants”
The European Union is not and has never been about «Brussels» but a project driven and designed by its Member States, each of which has decided unilaterally and democratically that this is the path they wish to adopt, including Hungary.
