I love today's lectionary readings -- which contrast foolishness and wisdom. From the book James, we get this warning about thoughtless speech:
"How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell.... /2
....For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the tongue-- a restless evil, full of deadly poison." 3/
Sounds like Twitter. Especially the way the current president uses it. But he's not the only one! 4/
But we needn't be controlled by our worst impulses. There is an alternative: Wisdom. 5/
From Proverbs:

Wisdom cries out in the street;
in the squares she raises her voice.
At the busiest corner she cries out;
at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: 6/
“How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?
How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing
and fools hate knowledge?
Give heed to my reproof;
I will pour out my thoughts to you;
I will make my words known to you. 7/
And what is made know by wisdom? In one of the most beautiful passages in scripture, wisdom is embodied as the female vision of God. This is from Wisdom 7: 8/
For wisdom is a reflection of eternal light,
a spotless mirror of the working of God,
and an image of his goodness.

Although she is but one, she can do all things,
and while remaining in herself, she renews all things;

9/
in every generation she passes into holy souls
and makes them friends of God, and prophets;
for God loves nothing so much as the person who lives with wisdom.

10/
She is more beautiful than the sun,
and excels every constellation of the stars.
Compared with the light she is found to be superior,
for it is succeeded by the night,
but against wisdom evil does not prevail.

11/
She reaches mightily from one end of the earth to the other,
and she orders all things well.

12/
So, we have the inferno of the tongue contrasted with the eternal light of wisdom. One curses, the other overcomes evil. One destroys, the other orders. 13/
We all have a choice. Do I want to be ruled by words that add to the cacophony of these evil days? Or do I desire a path of wisdom, of light, life, and love? May we all consider our words today, and choose our way well. #SundayMorning #SundayMotivation 14/

Since Friday, I was mostly off-line -- I was leading a retreat at Ghost Ranch, NM. This was the view I woke up to:
I'd make some sort of snarky comment like, "What did I miss?"

But I know what I missed. Just enough wifi to hear some of the news.
It was hard -- knowing that was happening, how important, how much pain my friends and colleagues were feeling, how angering. How I'd been shaking with rage for days before I got to NM.

Well, it is #SundayMorning and the lectionary readings again preach themselves. For those of you who don't know what a lectionary is, it is an assigned 3 yr cycle of readings for churches -- prepped long ago.

The text for this week is the story of Esther.
About a woman -- in this case, the Queen -- who stands up against male authorities and insists on justice.

(Yeah, you can't make these things up.)
The king and Haman went in to feast with Queen Esther. On the second day, as they were drinking wine, the king again said to Esther, “What is your petition, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you. And what is your request? Even to the half of my kingdom, it shall be fulfilled.”

I don't expect much out of Jerry Falwell, but this one leaves me nearly speechless.

There is NOTHING here that remotely resembles Christianity.
There is no ethical position in political theology EVER in church history that supports these words.
It is a clear attack on Jeff Flake -- whose friendship, it is widely reported, with Chris Coons is based (in part) on the belief that quiet faith is an aspect of the moral life of politics.

Dear Sen .@JeffFlake:
I grew up in Scottsdale, graduating from Saguaro HS in 1977. During 1976-77, I was Chairperson of AZ Teenage Republicans and was Teenage Republican of the Year.
I even have a letter from Sen Goldwater thanking me for my energy and passion for the Republican party in Arizona.
A lot of my friends now don't know that, because, quite honestly, it has been a long time since I've voted for the GOP. Because the party hasn't been good to women. A party I once proudly served seemed to betray women like me with a deep commitment to justice.

Whew.

I realized something today I'd never realized before.

I've written about my own #MeToo that happened when I was 14. For years after, I was terrified of flying.
It never occurred to me that there could have been a connection between the two things.
I didn't want to be confined in a small space with strangers -- one in which I was strapped in with no control.
