In lieu of creating a whole new account/blog documenting the anti-Micronesian hate I see online, I’ve decided to just make a thread of it. I encourage everyone to read through it, share their own, contribute, and RT. Will be using the hashtag #BeingMicronesian with this thread.
Here’s my previous pinned thread about some of the anti-Micronesian hate I’d recently seen in a #StolenStuffHawaii post. #BeingMicronesian
Here are the screenshots from the same #StolenStuffHawaii post, unedited... (Part 01)

#BeingMicronesian usually entails having to remind folks that they, too, are Micronesian...
It’s a weird part of #BeingMicronesian, watching Chamorro people (also Micronesians) constantly refer to us like somehow we’re not all from the same region... 🤔
There was this post on IG... It was practically inviting some derogatory nonsense... #BeingMicronesian
This is one I saw a long time ago, but never got around to sharing... I’m sad that it doesn’t surprise me to see comments like this coming from people who’ve worked in schools... #BeingMicronesian
Pieces of another old anti-Micronesian thread from FB... Grateful for the admin trying to keep things under control, but sometimes it’s hard when everyone’s got something disparaging to say. #BeingMicronesian
Apparently “100% of low income housing are Micronesians,” according to this FB post... Included follow up comments as well (Part 01)

I’m guessing that this dude is a world traveler and cultural anthropologist based on his post... 🤔 #BeingMicronesian
Per Housing First reports, their clients are: Asian (47%), Native Hawaiian (40%), and White (38%). Doesn’t leave much room for Micros, assuming they even qualify. #BeingMicronesian
I wonder if the people who constantly cite Micronesians in Hawaii as the fault of Democrats realize that the COFAs that made it possible to come to the US were signed under the very-Republican Reagan administration... 🤔 #BeingMicronesian
A couple of FB posts that I wasn’t sure how to classify... 🤔🤔🤔 #BeingMicronesian
Having been born and raised in Oregon, it’s sad to see an athlete representing my home state being part of the anti-Micronesian hate... I hope he doesn’t treat the actual Micronesian students at @OregonState this way...
This tweet was disappointing on multiple levels... #BeingMicronesian
Twitter is just filled with all kinds of anti-Micronesian sentiment... #BeingMicronesian
I didn’t realize that Micronesians were forced into leaving their islands due to an active war. 🤔 #BeingMicronesian
Thankfully, screenshots don’t phase this one... #BeingMicronesian
“Micronesian” is used as an insult against non-Micronesians... 🤦🏽‍♀️ #BeingMicronesian
Micronesians ≠ Cockroaches
#BeingMicronesian
🤔 Ummmmm... What..? 🤔 #BeingMicronesian
The same could be said for Arthur’s mom... 🤭 Goodness- That was almost as rude as the original tweet... #BeingMicronesian
How much shit would we get for making Polynesians the butts of our jokes..? #BeingMicronesian
As opposed to other Islander gatherings, where they’re decked out looking like what exactly..? The covers of Vogue and GQ..? #BeingMicronesian
Leaving this as a placeholder... I’ve got more screenshots, but looking at all these again is draining and I got work to go do... 😕
@ArreEyyeAyye asked the right question. ✊🏾 Is it insulting that we’re still closely tied to our respective cultures? Or is it insulting because we know our roots and choose to acclimate rather than assimilate..? #AskingForAFriend
Actually our respective social structures tend to be more complex- for some of us that includes matrilineal foundations and genuinely egalitarian systems. But you’d have to want to know about #BeingMicronesian, versus being deliberately obtuse, to learn these things.
Another post from #StolenStuffHawaii... This is gonna be a long one... (Part 01) #BeingMicronesian

And let’s not forget this video, which featured Pati and Anuhea and the “Infamous Shhhhhhhhh” followed by laughter... Culture Crew and Pati went on to apologize sincerely. I only ever saw some cit&paste responses from Anuhea. 🤷🏽‍♀️ #BeingMicronesian

I was in the ICU recovering from having my tumor-riddled mandible replaced with my fibula when news of this got big, and TBH it sucked. But I guess that’s just part of #BeingMicronesian, right? And let’s not even bring up the stans who came for us... 😔
Even when presented with evidence that #BeingMicronesian ≠ using up all the public assistance resources intended for others- people still continue to throw hate our way. (Part 01)

#BeingMicronesian is somehow always equated with having no values, but have any of these people ever taken the time to learn about our respective cultures? Doubtful- I’m highly doubtful.
I’m personally grateful for the work @CivilBeat does in trying to tell the story of #BeingMicronesian in Hawaii, but their comments section is always a disheartening matter... (Part 01)

Another example of how #BeingMicronesian sometimes means watching other Micronesians conveniently forget/completely disavow who they are... 🤦🏽‍♀️
According to the most recent data, #BeingMicronesian has nothing to do with exhausted public benefits... But gawd-forbid we let facts get in the way of bigotry... 🙄
Wait- so does #BeingMicronesian mean we’re all out stealing or are we lazy-asses parked up in our free public housing doing absolutely nothing besides collecting govt 💸💵💰? Y’all know it can’t be both, right?
Even when you’re minding your own damn business, some people will find a way to make a joke out of you #BeingMicronesian... Tbh, this post hurt me more than most of the others. 😔 (Part 01)

I’m mad that educators think/say this nonsense, and I’m mad that I’m not surprised. 😒 #BeingMicronesian
So I’m slowly getting around to posting responses to @ahofschneider’s awesome article about this thread. Thankfully, I’ve seen more good than bad- but the bad still sucks.
Here are my first screenshots from Reddit... In the Hawaii subreddit. I think it’s probably less about #BeingMicronesian and more about them taking issue with me. I think..?
Some people, no matter what you say, will stand by their opinions as facts. 🤷🏽‍♀️ #BeingMicronesian, I’m not gonna try to change her mind because it doesn’t work with Trump supporters either.
Maybe this is a more helpful way of explaining #BeingMicronesian...
Just to clarify: If, as a Micronesian, your solution to the #BeingMicronesian thread is to throw hate towards any particular group represented in this thread– YOU’VE MISSED THE POINT ENTIRELY & you’re no different from the people in the screenshots. #Omekrur
After the thread and both articles, some folx still wanna send hate. #BeingMicronesian sometimes also means insisting on having a good day despite the existence of the deliberately obtuse. #GonnaEnjoyTheseSnacksNow
Still..? #BeingMicronesian means dealing with the deliberately obtuse. 🙄🙄🙄
In a world of Ed Coughlins, I am grateful for people like @KanielaIng 🙏🏾 #BeingMicronesian
Filed under “It’s never happened to me/in front of me, therefore it’s not a real thing.” 🙄#BeingMicronesian

1: A thread about the older people in our lives and what they’re capable of, thanks to my amazing parents and in honor of #Pride month. ❤️ This is also the first time I’ve shared my full #ComingOut story. 🌈 (P.S. They’re also @islandirie’s parents! 😊)
2: When I was 8 y/o, I was watching [early] Oprah with my dad. Her guests were middle-aged women who identified as lesbians. I’d never heard that word before, so I asked him: “Papa, what’s a lesbian?”
3: My dad looked a bit alarmed but quickly said “Hush, that’s a bad word. It’s not for kids to use. Don’t say it again, okay?” And trusting my dad, it didn’t come up again. Not for a LONG time.

To the white folx out here, always reminding us that you’re our allies: you can stop now. In case no one took the time to let you know this tiny detail, let me tell you now: WE KNOW OUR ALLIES BY WHAT THEY DO, NOT BY WHAT THEY SAY.
Don’t do this work looking your invitation to a barbecue, cookout, fiesta, luau, blengur or any variation thereof. WE WILL NOT BE HANDING OUT GOLD STARS AND TROPHIES TO OUR MOST “WOKE” WHITE SAVIORS.
If you do this work, let it be because you know the difference between right and wrong, because you care about the people, because justice is greater than egos and accolades.
