And the crowd just erupted spontaneously into very loud and enthusiastic applause for Hill and I'm fighting back tears.
MIT President now making a weird point about how the diversity of an academic community increases the risk of harassment? What?
And now the president is reading from the textbook of what not to do according to our report: he says he is banning certain consensual relationships, increasing reporting mechanisms. Talking about training but not saying what type. Sigh.
MIT President making an important point now, at least: that we are all responsible for the culture of our institutions.
Now Prof. Hill starting her remarks after another big round of applause.
Prof. Hill talking about a series of talks on the gender-race imperative in science she organized, check out the archived talks: rle.mit.edu/anita-hill/
Hill: "If Title IX is the first step, this report is the critical next step." 😍😍😍
Prof. Widnall up next, Frazier Benya and I got shout outs :). Widnall explains a bit about how consensus reports work, and our statement of task.
Widnall now sharing definition of sexual harassment - showing that the definition encompasses much more than the sexual coercion/unwanted advances most think about. Sharing our iceberg figure now: sexual forms are held up by sexist forms, e.g. contempt for women.
I'm going to stop live tweeting because I think the rest of the presentation is reviewing the report, but I'm appreciating how attentive this crowd is.
Ok NIH, NSF, just call me when you are looking for a PI to run that follow up study... 💪
Q&A now, President Johnson discussing how we held ourselves to an evidentiary standard in order to reach consensus.
Prof. Hill asking about the use of "civility" and I wish there had been a moment to discuss tone policing, speaking truth to power, and problematizing civility. President Johnson did nod to it in her response.
Prof. Hill pointing out the inadequacies of litigation for handling harassment. Reminds us report's recommendations are to do the work within institutions not outside via the legal system.
This dude? Not my friend. Attacking the 2011 dear colleague letter and asking if the panel views the rights of the accused as "antiquated." President Johnson of course handles it flawlessly.
OMG I love this point: audience member who is a scholar of sexual harassment of millennials says report should be called "Sexual harassment by men" to center men as the perpetrators and the ones responsible for the problem.
Audience member asks what can I do if my employer keeps harassment cases secret and climate surveys aren't allowed. I wish there had been a way to spend more time with that person.

Over the last many years I’ve gotten asked “what to do” when harassed. I will write something longer on this when I get a minute, but let me 1st help you think through a decision tree. This is going to be ruthless, as opposed to matching my beliefs about how th world should work.
This advice is also going to be VICTIM CENTERED. This means that I am NOT putting the burden of bringing perpetrators to justice on victims. That is the fundamental flaw of our current system.
We can talk about bringing perps to justice in a WHOLE OTHER THREAD someday. But please, STOP making victims do all this work because you feel bad about the perp in your department.
