Listening in on @NIPSCO's 20-year planning meeting. NIPSCO is one of Indiana's five investor-owned utilities, located in NW Indiana. Owner of one of Indiana's five super polluters, Schahfer in Wheatfield. #RepowerIndiana
NIPSCO is like @VectrenIndiana in that it is also a gas company, and has second-highest rates in the state after Vectren. #RepowerIndiana
@VectrenIndiana Our @beyondcoal organizer and her team in Michigan City have been doing amazing work for the last year. Excited to hear what NIPSCO announces today in terms of its plans for how it will provide power in the future. #RepowerIndiana
@VectrenIndiana@BeyondCoal .@NIPSCO was the first Indiana investor-owned utility to submit an all-sources request for proposals - with exciting results that revealed that clean energy - wind, solar and storage - is competitive with fracked gas and cheaper than coal in Indiana. #RepowerIndiana
@VectrenIndiana@BeyondCoal@NIPSCO Compare NIPSCO’s RFP process to @VectrenIndiana's. NIPSCO asked for proposals from any type of energy generation able to deliver that energy to its customers. Vectren issued an RFP only for fracked gas and then chose itself as the supplier. #RepowerIndiana
@VectrenIndiana@BeyondCoal@NIPSCO NIPSCO’s RFP results brought into question the justification for @VectrenIndiana's fracked gas plant. Vectren should go back to the drawing board and find out what they can actually provide for their customers in terms of available affordable renewable energy. #RepowerIndiana
@VectrenIndiana@BeyondCoal@NIPSCO .@DeniseARahman of NAACP questioning @NIPSCO about impact of cap and trade programs on frontline communities, which bear the brunt of those programs if utilities are allowed to continue to pollute at the source.
“As well as the highest cost certainty and lowest cost risk.”
NIPSCO’s Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Development Dan Douglas says NIPSCO suspected that renewable prices were cheaper than those available from the typical engineering firms Indiana utilities work with - and so they issued the RFP which showed that they were.
@NIPSCO "The most viable option for customers would include moving up the retirement of a majority of
its remaining coal-fired generation in the next five years and all coal within the next 10 years....
@NIPSCO ....Likely replacement options point toward lower-cost renewable energy resources such as wind, solar and
battery storage technology."
