I was thinking. There's probably a lot of #writers that really want to get involved in the #WritingCommunity , but maybe don't know how or feel a little lost. So I decided to create a little guide on Book Twitter to go over the basics for anyone who needs it! A thread.
Common writing age-group acronyms:
MG = Middle Grade
YA = Young Adult
NA = New Adult (you may see a little conflict over this topic, so be wary. To quickly summarize, it's an age group between YA and A that typically depicts people between 18 - 30)
A = Adult
Common writing terms:
Beta Reader = Someone who reads and gives you feedback on the early drafts of your story. They read bc they enjoy.
CP/Critique Partner = A partnership where you read their story and they read yours for feedback.
1st, 2nd (X)st draft = stages of editing
Query = a submission to a publisher/agent to represent your book. Likewise, someone querying is looking for such representation.
WIP = Work In Progress (your manuscript)
ms = manuscript
MC = Main Character
LI = Love Interest
SC = Side Character
POV = Point of View
ARC = Advanced Reader Copy (not to be confused with Beta Reader! Anyone that gets a ARC is getting a book that's already represented by a professional, or someone who is publishing SOON. A Beta reads (semi) unpolished books by anyone looking for CRITIQUES)
Bookstagram = This is Instagram for readers/writers. I'm not as versed in the Insta realm, but it's basically book photography and aesthetics.
Tropes = Book cliches (not necessarily a bad thing, but includes: the Chosen One, love triangles, bad boy romance, lost princess, etc)
Places to find the community!
Hashtags:
#amwriting, #WritingCommunity, #writerslife, #writing, #writers, #WriterProblems, and probs a bunch more, but I'm not including writing games quite yet (see below)
Common community-supporting websites:
Wattpad.com, Tapas.io (more for comics, but books as well), NaNoWriMo.com (this is a writing challenge! Check it out to learn to increase your word count!)
Other ways to get involved:
There are several writing games on Twitter you might have seen writers playing. Every day there's a new question to answer about your current manuscript, and you use them to get to know your story better and admire others!
A couple I personally know of:
#authorsconfession
#wipworldbuilders
#themerrywriter
#ThursdayAesthetic (This is only on thurs, and is a collage-making challenge. Check out the host to find out more!)
#writerlyWIPchat
(New games pop up all the time, so keep a look out!)
To add a little more on #aesthetics, they are collages of photos that represent the themes featured in your story. Most people get their images off of Pinterest and put them together on an app. These are mostly made and shared for inspiration, nothing professional.
To save on space, I won't give whole explanations, but here are some writing terms you might want research if you don't know them. Some are just common opinions on writing:
-Show, don't tell
-Kill your darlings
-Adverbs are the enemy
-Purple prose
-Deep POV
-Character arcs
And that's about it! I might have missed a bunch, so if you have anything more to add, or have questions, don't be shy! This info may seem obvious to some, but newbies may be intimidated to join the community if they don't get what's what, so let's welcome with open arms 🤗
