Learning about key components of the Athena SWAN Process which has been used widely in the UK (140+ members) #UBC@NSERC_CRSNG
First step is a rigorous self-assessment to identify issues and create an action plan for addressing them. This step must be tailored to the institution, can’t just rote “copy” others.
Next step is apply to a peer-reviewed panel for “Bronze” designation which means institution has robustly done these things, and now has four years to work on the plan before applying again
What is it all about? Need an action plan, not just “considering” doing things. Must address STRUCTURAL issues. Must be an individualized tailored approach and include evidence-based quantitative progress.
Silver designation means the organization has demonstrated its impact and eventually Gold designation means institution is acting as a champion and helping other institutions through serving as a beacon/leader
Once the overall university is Bronze, excelling Departments within the university can apply for Silver/Gold @Athena_SWAN
And on a personal note, I first learned about @Athena_SWAN from the ally and champion @BrendanGodley and was impressed by his work and commitment
Thread: “How to WriteUp Your PhD and not get Overwhelmed” I’m spending a week with one of my (co-supervised) PhD students here in India. We are discussing general principles for getting it all done, so I will share some thoughts, in case it helps others at this stage #phdchat
First #protip : Start thinking in Paragraphs. All you will do next, really, is write a few paragraphs, that’s not too bad, is it? Live and breathe your science thoughts as paragraphs, or tidy bundles of thoughts that go well together
Don’t forget that a paragraph is really only 5-6 sentences. All these sentences should support and develop your topic sentence.
