Good afternoon to #BIWisdom I hope everyone had an agreeable and productive week!
Today I want to start #BIWisdom with thinking about #Success with BI in different horizontal Business Functions.
In particular, we know from our #BIWisdom that #Success is fostered by sharing best practices, sometimes at events like @RealBIEvent 😉
Today I can share how #IT Departments of many different kinds measure themselves on this quest for Success #BIWisdom
In writing the report on #IT Analytics, I knew that I would be highly motivated as there are so many wonderful people who work in #IT as a function. Millions of them in fact. #BIWisdom.
And those many millions of people collectively work on a global IT Spend of over $3T. That's T as in trillion. #BIWisdom
So how do they rate the importance of such work? #BIWisdom research shows 93% of respondents score IT Analytics as “critical” (31%), “very important” (43%), or “important” (18%). The importance is even greater in large organizations and in the Asia -Pacific region.
This is not too surprising, when so much is at stake. #BIWisdom common sense would say it's important to know how you're doing...
Organization of all sizes contributed to this #IT Analytics report, so it's not the case that large orgs dominate. IT #Analytics is critical in most orgs. #BIWisdom
First a little on how people said they were measuring. #BIWisdom Most said they had a dedicated third party app *designed for* #ITAnalytics
Interestingly, where #ITAnalytics was most critical, this "Other" measurement method was scored highest... Next #BIWisdom survey will have to probe deeper...
So, to get to @tpowlas main question: what are they measuring? 4 main things: Ops Mgmt, Resource Planning, Resource Mgmt, and Systems Development. Apologies for lack of #ITIL acronyms 😉
Two quick points: there is considerable consensus in this #IT #Analytics report. However, even a "small" 5% divergence in a $12T industry is many billions, every year... #BIWisdom.
The importance of these different metrics has an interesting spread across industries. #BIWisdom ... I became slightly poetic describing. it.
Technology companies frequently find themselves in the vanguard, needing to invent systems to assist their innovations. Transportation is a gigantic industry, full of innovation, moving parts, and plenty of older OEM systems being supplanted. #BIWisdom
Systems development innovation and creativity happen both at the “tip of the spear” and in the neglected hinterlands, and both require critical invention with intensely limited resources. #BIWisdom.
...and apologies to @PhantorGorth if he is traveling/suffering on a British Railway commute... (I have read sad stories...) #BIWisdom.
To get back to @PhantorGorth question on tickets. #IT Operations Mgmt service analysis scores highest; incident analysis ranks second, especially in #Insurance and #Telecommunications. #BIWisdom.
Now in this #BIWidom report I was very happy to add a brief "Suggestions"section. One I've already covered: even a small shift = big $$$
#2 Consensus on Importance of IT Analytics
Benefit: IT Analytics is highly likely to succeed and pay for itself with a positive return.
Cost: Your attention. IT Analytics is a “must-have” capability to compete effectively. Plan for the activity at an appropriate scale. #BIWisdom
#3 Watch Out: #Innovative Competitors are Coming
Benefit: It may be possible to out-compete your market using more advanced “other” IT Analytics (currently undisclosed).
Cost: Methods are currently uncertain, requiring future research.
In current research into all kinds of #IT Analytics companies, there is some wonderful innovation out there to optimize just about any aspect of #IT. #KeepLooking... #BIWisdom.
#4 (of 5)
APAC Dominance in Services Underlined
Benefit: A true center of excellence in outsourced and off-shored IT #Services execution exists. It *can* be a real help for teams who are over-stretched.
Cost: You must determine your strategy: #outsource or #offshore.
#BIWisdom
#5/5
Expect Success
Benefit: IT Analytics initiatives have a success rate of 83%, just lower than the Dresner Advisory BI Success Index #TM of 85%.
Cost: Do not miss this opportunity. Your competitors are already very active in realizing the returns on #IT #Analytics. #BIWisdom
