Thread) I worked for an organization in my 20s that ran two Indigenous healing centres. One for men and one for women.The work they did and do with inmates is amazing.
The purpose of these centres in part is preparing people to be released #CdnPoli @CPC_HQ @liberal_party

The recidivism rate for those at these centres was incredibly low in part because of the intensive Indigenous focused programming to work thru the trauma that had led these men and women to commit crime. It’s hard work and they had to want to do the work to heal

Some centres allow the female inmates to have their children with them. This is designed to give these children the opportunity to bond with their parent in infanthood and again prepare the inmate for parenting thru courses and support.

Terri Lynne McClintic will not be released for at least another 15 years. She does not fit the first criteria I laid out. This isn’t someone who will be released or given supervised release for years.

She does not want to do the hard work to address why she participated in the rape and murder of a little girl. She assaulted another inmate 6 years ago and by all accounts has shown consistent aggressive behaviour. So she doesn’t fit the second criteria.

She will be in a facility with children. A staggering fact given that the conditions of her eventual parole are certainly to include a provision she is not to be around anyone under 18.

She is not indigenous. What seems lost in the rhetoric here is that her placement at that facility is taking away a spot for an indigenous woman who is closer to her release date and likely needing specialized supports to prepare her for that.

Our correctional system which at one point placed a teenage Ashley Smith in a maximum security facility for throwing apples. Ignoring her mental health concerns which led to her suicide. Now places a murderer of a child in a healing centre without her showing any remorse.

This isn’t a liberal issue or a conservative issue. This is a human issue and an issue with how and why Corrections Canada makes their decisions. And this decision is wrong.
This is a systemic issue that @RalphGoodale and @JustinTrudeau need to address

She needs to be moved back to a maximum security facility. CSC needs to be more transparent in how they make their decisions and involve family members in those decisions.
This isn’t a political decision it’s a human one.
