Okay, here at @ChathamHouse waiting to hear @MthuliNcube has to say about Economic Reform & Recovery in #Zimbabwe
#CHAfrica
It’s a very packed house! Pple are clearly interested (or amused)
@MthuliNcube takes podium. New dispensation working towards vision 2030 - where Zimbabwe will be a middle income economy.
@MthuliNcube made sure to make all aware - he’s been in post for only a month 😬 & today is his birthday
Vision is to move away from a pay as you go pension scheme to a more formal structure. Defined benefit scheme of sorts

(My thoughts: Interesting because most countries which offer DB pensions are moving away 🤷🏾‍♀️)
Projecting significant growth in Mining
@MthuliNcube - these projections give Gvt an indication of which sectors to support and bolster. Keen to let private sector get on
Adopting @nelsonchamisa’s SMART Agriculture policy
Says Zimbabwe is under explored. Zim has lithium, a wealth of resources
Retooling industry will be key. He says right now managing industry is tough
Says crowdfunding for Cholera was successful - only didn’t go down well with diaspora but it was voluntary..
Housing policy will be key
About 40 pieces of legislative amendments for new Gvt in the next 2 years - including:
Says they are very serious about privatisation. Some of this may be used to capitalise Gvt mention (thinking very early on this)
POSA & AIPA to be removed
Elections were peaceful
Land Reform - plan to compensate white farmers.
Ncube says the market is already self dollarising and he won’t argue with the market.
Issue is choreographing and the time it would take to de-monitise the bond.
Question from @ZimEye about property rights and continued political violence which may undermine his economic recovery efforts
Ncube - Gvt committed to observing rule of law. Not in a position to deny allegations of political violence
Question about missing billions from diamond sector
Africa doesn’t need aid - needs to plug the holes
@Wamagaisa (sorry Alex, only got the back of your head)
There’s still a need to re-engage domestically re legitimacy issue
@MthuliNcube response to @Wamagaisa re New dispensation being legitimate.
@MthuliNcube trying to take a selfie with me but I was busy☺️
w/ the BSR maestro @Wamagaisa
I couldn’t capture everything but a few more things. There was a question around deposit safety. How safe are current accounts? Mthuli said FCA accounts ARE safe and not to be raided.
Interesting distinction.
Most pple don’t hv FCA accounts.
Question about commonwealth re-entry. Mthuli said Gvt is committed to rejoining.
Also acknowledged Gvt wasn’t prepared for Cholera and that these are mediaeval diseases that we shouldn’t be dealing with
If y’all want to get in touch..
Missed footage: investment in housing will be key to building upper middle class

“These people must realise that I’m not afraid of death, it’s debt that kills me” - Sidney Donald Malunga laughed as he reassured those in the car with him.

His friend recalls him saying this in 1993, a year before he and his driver died in a car accident on 28 Aug 1994
Post independence, in Nov 1980 - Sidney Donald Malunga was one of the many Zapu members detained at the order of the then Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s office.
On the 26th of Jan 1983, he was the first legislator in Parliament to ring the alarm on Gukurahundi and protest parliament for the killings which he called out as ethnic cleansing.

He was later detained outside parly for doing so

Can we talk abt how legendary Lookout Khalisabantu Masuku was.

On his deathbed - he had one request, a watermelon. What followed was a nationwide search (it was out of season) Joshua Nkomo, Tshinga Dube, Vote Moyo, Dumiso & Zodwa Dabengwa looking for one. #Zapuhistory
The winners were Zodwa Dabengwa & Tshinga Dube.. Zodwa had one flown in from Bulawayo & Tshinga got one at Meikles hotel. He got his wish.. Legend!
He commanded the Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) the military wing of Zapu after the the death of Alfred Nikitha Mangena in 1978 up to 1980. In 1980 to 1982 he served as the Deputy Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army.
