A pastor I know was recently researching the what the founders of the SBC had to say about slavery. 1/ #Thread
While it's been common knowledge that the SBC was founded to allow missionaries to own slaves as they moved West with the Gospel, 2/
He was dismayed to learn that many influential leaders not only supported slavery "just" theoretically, they also owned slaves. 3/
Broadus, he read, stated that the Civil War was God's judgment on America, not for slavery, but for treating slaves poorly. 4/
The entire conversation only further confirmed that critiquing leaders is helpful and necessary. Leader doesn't equal infallible. 5/
This confirms that questioning language, intention, and context of decisions such as releasing the #NashvilleStatement is vital. 6/
If questioning the actions and attitudes of leaders becomes anathema, we cease to community, iron sharpening iron. 7/
If we can no longer disagree with the people we like, we have lost a valuable form of discipleship and mutual sanctification. 9/
Someone asked me why I hadn't signed the #NashvilleStatement bc they thought I "liked them." That's believing you must agree to love. /9
And we harp CONSTANTLY re: LGBT friends that "we can love you and not agree with you." Same applies here. 10/
There are MANY people I love & respect, who have had profound impact on my education and sanctification who signed on. 11/
And I will continue to challenge them, publically and privately, to sharpen their argument and soften their tone. 12/
Because if Boyce and Broadus and others could defend slavery, perhaps Burk and Akin and Mohler could be wrong on this. 13/13
