Y'all ready for a "did you know?" thread about undocumented immigrants? Well sit down & you'll see how it's not as simple as people think
Did you know there are over 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the US? This is also not by chance but b/c of broken policies
Did you know that 42% came legally and over stayed their visas? Did you know that in 2015 Canada had the highest number of overstayed Visas?
Did you know that we're not all from Mexico? Mexican migration is lowering & *Surprise* there are about 575,000 #UndocuBlack immigrants
Did you know that about 7 million people live in mixed status families? Meaning they have citizen, permanent resident, & undocu fam members?
Did you know most undocumented immigrants have lived in the US for an avg of 13 years? #HereToStay
Did you know undocu immigrants paid about $11.7 billion in state and local taxes A YEAR & paid over $13 BILLION in Social security?
Did you know that NO human is illegal? Okay, just checking.
Did you know immigrants are less likely to commit crimes? (Both undocumented and documented immigrants)
Did you know that in 2013 almost 50% of deported immigrants were convicted of only traffic or immigration offenses? #Not1More
Did you know that about 3/4 of detention beds are owned by PRIVATE for profit prison corporations not the government?
Did you know that private prison stocks doubled after election day?
Did you know that it would cost about $70 Billion to build a border wall? That's roughly the same amount we spend on the Dept. of Education
Did you know a lot of our ancestors would not qualify to come to the US if they came now?
Oh and did you know that in 1929, Europeans benefited from the "Registry Act" which was in essence —AMNESTY
Did you know that being undocumented has CIVIL penalties NOT criminal ones. I told you, no human is illegal.
Did you know that our immigration system is not simple, it has different rules for different countries
Did you know that immigration law is just as complicated as tax law? Its not simply numbers but trends, racist past policies, & restrictions
Did you know "securing the border" has an unintended consequence of having people stay longer b/c of the risk & money it took to cross?
Did you know DACA gave 800,000 people the opportunity to work legally and come out of the shadows?
Did you know that we are first humans, we are worthy of dignity and respect. We cannot separate that from any argument w/ immigration
The point is, there are a lot of misconceptions with immigration, enforcement & our demographics. Stop trying to make it simple b/c it's not
The only simple part, is that we are a part of the US and we want to live our lives like you, without the fear of deportation & with respect
We need immigration policy that works with our global economy & recognizes the value of immigrants because we are #HereToStay. The end.

It's still hard to believe that the #DACA program ended today, and that there is still no concrete legislation passed for 800,000 of us.
you know something, DACA really changed things. Not only for 800,000 of us, but for our families & communities. For me it came my senior yr
You cant undo our work as DACA recipients. You cant take back our education. You cant unsee our stories of triumph and struggles #HereToStay

A thread of what #DACA is and isn't because #DACA works and it is nothing close to a "free ride."
#DACA is a workers permit. It is not a way to go to college. We still do not qualify for federal aid (FAFSA/Pell grants/student loans)
DACAmented folks PAY taxes. We (all undocumented imm) even add to Social Security taxes & don't see any of it.
