Was explaining to a (white) friend that for all its flaws, Uber is life support. I KNOW the driver will accept my fare (unlike black cabs)
It's something I have been hearing from my WoC (esp black and hijabi) students as well. Uber gives them freedom to move about the city
Especially if there are two or more passengers (and often my students travel together for safety), it often ends up cheaper that @TfL.
I am all for corporates 'following the law' as @SadiqKhan says but as that that criteria is applied less than evenly (Amazon anyone?), ugh!
Frankly this seems to be a decision intended to please black cab drivers and making the #London more hostile for PoC/migrants etc
But then again given UK government policies are all about making the country ineffective and unwelcoming, I am not even vaguely surprised
Btw watch as male white commentators - especially on the left - line up to support the anti Uber decision. Ideological purity is a privilege
Let me be clear: my problem is that 'regulations' are applied in the UK in less than even manner. It is not just Uber.
So pretending that some how TFL decision is one made on principle is bullshit.
Two, the day UK/London govts/TFL begin to care about women's safety enough to make policy decisions based on it will be when pigs fly
Three, the split is telling: white left male voices (and yes with a sprinkling of others 🙄 so save the #notall's) supporting TFL decision
PoC/women/migrant voices more mixed. We understand the complexities and issues but we also know the function Uber serves for us
Finally, call me a cynic but if I see most white men lining up on the same side on ANY issue, my alarm bells go off. And LOUD!
And that one is on y'all.
