On #WorldMentalHealthDay I want to remind all you authors and illustrators out there to take care of yourselves.
Take weekends (even if they’re in the middle of the week). Take breaks. Play sports. Go see friends. Switch off.
The thing that you depend on is your brain, and if it’s not working properly you can’t keep on creating. So remember to look after you!
Asking to move a deadline won’t end your career. Lying on the floor sobbing because you made the deadline and it destroyed you ... might.
Being an author is a strange career. Everyone outside it will think your life is awesome. And sometimes it is! But it’s ok if it’s not.
So group hug for creators on #WorldMentalHealthDay. We all need it.
Oh, and one more thing: if you’re struggling, do consider therapy. I go, it’s very useful and it keeps me calm through busy times.

If you are an author and you’re wondering what you can do about @clpe1’s #ReflectingRealities report (because you should be), here are some suggestions.
1. Put BAME characters in your books. You need to do this thoughtfully. You need to research, you need to listen, you need to make them actually different to your white characters. But you need to do it!
Look around at the human beings you share your life with. I’m willing to bet that many of them are actually not white (if they *are*, then perhaps consider why this is). ‘Write what you know’ is a good general rule, but remember that what you know is more than whiteness.
