I’m not participating in #WomenBoycottTwitter, for two reasons: 1) ask yourself why this solidarity never happened for women of color.
Sadly, the white women who are off Twitter today can’t see the critiques about how #solidarityisforwhitewomen. We need to listen to WOC.
2) As someone who has been targeted by people who want me off Twitter, I’ll never give up my voice. I find strength in words, not silence.
Instead of disappearing, may I suggest amplifying oppressed voices instead? Or even listening yourself, instead of walking away?
We all have to protect ourselves, and Twitter can be a dangerous platform—for some more than others. Ask yourself, “who do I stick up for?”
None of what I’m saying here is original, by the way. So also ask yourself if you’re really only hearing this message because I’m white.

Is this thing on? Cool.

So, uh, hi, everyone. Did I ever tell you about the time I almost died in Siberia?
I came to the Sakha Republic of Russia last month to do some field research and film a documentary on ice age fossils in the Siberian permafrost. It was, hands down, one of the most incredible experiences of my life, and I can’t wait to tell you all about it when the show airs.
I was feeling a bit rough towards the end of the two-week trip, and but I thought it was fatigue from the long days and jet lag. But the day we were set to fly from the remote town that was our base back to to Yakutsk, I was getting winded just walking to the bathroom.

Expertise used to mean something. Now, anyone who’s read a few blogs thinks they’re qualified to evaluate science. This is also enabled by deliberate campaigns to cast expert communities as “biased” “echo chambers.”
No joke, I’ve seen climate deniers use their lack of a job in the field as an advantage over scientists, because they “have more time to evaluate thousands of arguments.”
This is disengenous, because 1) it implies we’re not keeping up with a dynamic field, 2) they’re almost never engaging directly with primary literature. It’s a circulatory dialogue via blogs and tweets.

Re: my last RT, climate curmudgeons love “gotcha” moments when they point out that you don’t have a PhD in climatology. Here’s the thing: there actually aren’t many. And that’s okay.
Climate science is a multidisciplinary field, involving earth science, atmospheric c science, physics, ecology, oceanography, geography, and more—plus intersections with policy, law, social science, history, you name it.
Climate scientists may have degrees in “geology,” “environmental science,” “geography,” “atmospheric and oceanic sciences,” etc. Degree names reflect institutional history and politics (eg, not all universities have the same departments or degrees, but cover the same bases).

Nobody thinks medical doctors, clergy, elected officials, or members of the military are pretentious for using titles. So, why academics? Titles are a sign of respect for training, expertise, and the nature of your service to others. Why not default to that respect?
Why is it that the only people I ever see arguing that academic titles don’t matter are white men?
The elite, Ivory Tower model of academia is outdated (and lets be honest, started to be eroded when the first Morrill Act founded land grant universities in 1862). It’s further eroded as our ranks have diversified to include women, POC, PWD, the poor, and LGBTQ+ folks.

You may have heard of the Dutch rewilding experiment: horses and other large herbivores free roaming in a nature preserve, to reconstruct prehistoric ecosystems. theguardian.com/environment/20…
I've been following this story with interest, as it's one of the few rewilding experiments to include large herbivores. One of my research areas is the ecological impacts of losing ice age megafauna, like mammoths.
What's happened at the Oostvaardersplassen? It's complicated, and I've never visited this site, but I have some preliminary thoughts (@JCSvenning, I'd love to hear yours, too).
